She's home!

I've decided to "officially" call her Sakura, though Flower is definitely going to stick as a nickname (my pets always have a ton of those anyway, haha). Anyway...she is an absolute doll! The journey from New York to Oregon was fairly stressful, but once home she relaxed quite a bit. She is shy, but willing to trust both me and my boyfriend already. She absolutely loves her cheeks rubbed.

Like any curious parrot, she does like to explore with her beak, but she's surprisingly gentle and doesn't seem to bite at all. She gives warning nips if she does not want to step up and you try to press the issue, but they don't hurt at all.

My only concerns with her so far are:

1) She's barely eating.

2) So far, she isn't moving around her cage much; she just sits in her favorite spot all the time. I didn't even have a perch there originally, but she was clinging to the bars so I added it.

I'm going to give her a smaller bowl next to this favored spot, and maybe also try added some more small seeds to the mix. Last night when I had her out, I scattered a little food on the coffee table and she picked out a few millet seeds halfheartedly. She also nibbled at a couple of Zupreem fruit tiel pellets. But she hasn't gone over to the food bowl in the cage.

Without further ado, here are some photos of the pretty girl.

Poor thing had a night fright a couple of days before I brought her home, and lost most of her tail. But at least her wings are growing back in nicely, and she isn't doing too badly when she tries to fly.

Her cage so far:

I bought her so many toys, and only a fraction of them fit with the cage layout so far. But it's a work in progress. I'm so bummed -- I ordered a dragonwood perch online to replace the big dowel that came with the cage, and it's GORGEOUS but slightly too long. The seller assured me it would fit all 36" cages but there's no way. Does anyone have ideas of where I could take it to get trimmed down a little? I might try Home Depot out of desperation. I don't want to have to send it back.

Her giant manzanita stand should be arriving at some point today.

She is just gorgeous. Love her cage!! what a beauty.Love the name. As far as her not eating. I am sure she just needs to get used to her new surroundings. Give her a few days if she is still not eating then maybe a vet visit is in order just to be sure she is okay.

I tried to give her some spray millet last night and she ignored it...but she did pick out a few millet seeds off the table, so I'm hoping she'll eat some cockatiel seed if I put the bowl right next to her favorite perch today. Speaking of which, time to wake her up now!

She is GORGEOUS!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ i love her cage- AWESOME set up!! And the sneaker toy?! Omg. Lol

I think once she settles in after a few days, she will start to come out of her shell- with such a big move and having to get used to a new cage filled with tons of new things, in a new place with new people...ahhhh!!! Sounds stressful just thinking about it lol I think she just needs some time to adjust :)

Has she eaten yet? Are you continuing her with her previous diet? Maybe she doesn't like the bowl? (weird, but could be a possibility ;))

As far as trimming the perch- if you don't have a hand saw or anything, the home depot thing sounds like a good idea to me!

She is gorgeous! Her colours are stunning:)
Her cage is fit for a princess. I also think Home Depot sounds like a good idea to get that perch cut:) Congratulations and I hope she starts adjusting quickly.

She is gorgeous!

Have you tried warm oatmeal or mashed sweet potato?

You might want to put a towel on your lap and spoon feed her, both as a bonding experience and to make sure she is eating okay.

As always, check the temp, make sure it isn't too hot. We don't want burned crops.

I did think maybe it was the bowl she didn't like...but she drinks water out of one that is identical. She has some trouble navigating the cage (I think it's because the bar spacing is wider than what she's used to, and she was in such a small one before), and yet I've seen her go all the way over to the other side to get a drink. She can see the food, and I know it's basically the same thing she was fed in her previous home. I really don't understand. She isn't scared -- on the contrary, she's relaxed. She's preening, and comes over to the side of the cage for scritches if I offer my hand.

At least she's drinking, and she's far from thin...so I guess for the moment she is okay...

I do have a hand saw, but isn't dragonwood really hard? I could give it a shot. Maybe if I hold the perch while someone else saws, we could do it. Otherwise, Home Depot it is.

I hadn't thought of offering a comfort feeding...I'll give it a shot. Thanks. :)

Update: play stand came, and as soon as I put her on it, she went over to the bowl and ate. I guess there's something about the one in her cage that she doesn't like.

SO GLAD to hear she's eating again!! ❤❤

Now what's the difference between the bowls?? Are they different types? Did she normally get fed on a stand?

The one on the stand is smaller in diameter, and really deep, while the ones in her cage are shallow and wide. Both are stainless steel. She drinks out of the water dish in her cage, so I'm thinking rather than the bowl itself, there could be something else she dislikes. The perch next to it, or the location? But it's just a grapevine perch, which I know she doesn't have a problem with. It's rather confusing. I believe she ate inside her cage in her other homes.
