Prerequisite Statement; I HOPE THIS PHOTO COMES THROUGH.

Good people of Parrot Forums, it gives me great pleasure to present to you my new baby KNUCKLES. She is a six month old Citron Crested Cockatoo, and I look forward to providing her with a carefree life of love, happiness and learning.

I hope to be picking her up in a few days. She has been on hold for me for almost two weeks now. I would have picked her up sooner, but I could not afford it. I have made some (drastic) financial maneuvers to make this happen, but every sacrifice has been made happily, in anticipation of bringing her into a loving home.

I made this decision weeks ago, and was afraid to tell you all, for several reasons. As you know, I am not a long time bird owner, most people discourage you from even saying the word cockatoo, and she is not a rescue. I hope I am not disappointing anyone. I hope to rescue birds in the future, when my situation allows for more space in my home, and when I have more experience with behavioral issues. Until such time, each month, I pick a bird, who needs a little help, and donate financially, or with toys and treats. I consider it an offering (albeit small) until I can be of greater help. Its my way of saying thanks for being able to have such wonderful birds in my life.

I'm sure I will have lots of questions once she comes home, and I look forward to learning (even more) from you all.

She's gorgeous!!! I'm sure she will be very happy with you and your birdy family ;)

I really don't think anyone would think less of you for buying her so don't apologise and/or explain yourself for giving such a magnificent creature a loving home, ok? :). You did good!

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Only you know what you can and cannot handle.

Now, Knuckles is gorgeous! Congrats! My MIL had a LSC2 named Knucklehead :)

Argh. I have a very short video of her, but when I try to upload it, it says "invalid file type".

She says "hello" on the video. It's sooo cute.

Knuckles is incredible!!! Congratulations! I had six weeks to contemplate taking in a too. I didn't get a lot of encouragement. I'm so glad I didn't listen. I was pretty much advised to seek counseling if I was seriously considering adopting a cockatoo, but I saw his face and I couldn't say no. We live in Texas and even though we had years of experience with dogs we were told Texas is no place for a Saint Bernard. Abby was a member of our family for thirteen and a half wonderful years and she will live in our hearts forever. It wasn't nearly long enough. I remember thinking I wasn't qualified every time we took in a new family member, but we kept them all, even the human ones. No regrets, it's been a joyride every time.
I like the name, Knuckles but I'm curious about how you chose it. I can't wait to see more photos of your new girl.

She is gorgeous. I am also a new Too owner so I will be right there with you. Mine of course is much smaller than yours. I figured I could sort of....ease into large birds...LOL...Not that, he, in any way shape or form, has any idea that he is a smaller too....And don't try to tell him. He thinks he is a big boy.

Allee, I will tell you how I came up with Knuckles. I have actually had the name picked out for a while.

I first realized that I needed a cockatoo in my life, one day while at the store where we have gotten all of our birds. I was picking up birdie toys, and I was introduced to a baby Sulpher Crested named Bubbles. My heart MELTED on sight. But then when she walked up my arm, sat on my shoulder, and kissed me on the cheek, I nearly died. I wanted her SO badly...... AND I had the rent money in my wallet. I am FAMOUS for making rash decisions, so it seemed like a given, that I would walk out of there with her............but I didn't (she cost more than a months rent anyway!). I handed her back and left the store, and paid the rent the next day.

I couldn't get her out of my mind. She was so sweet. She was so smart. I had already begun to experience success with training my other bird, and I wanted to share that with this beautiful little girl. My boyfriend, who is extremely indulgent, and who actually bought me my first bird, kept telling me that he was totally fine with it if I wanted to go back and get Bubbles. I wanted her alright, but I didn't have a quarter of what she cost left, after paying the monthly bills. I still couldn't get her out of my mind, and I wondered if I went and put a few hundred dollars down, if the owner of the shop would hold her for me. I was embarrassed to ask. (I had no idea at the time, that it is common practice)
After about a week of non stop cockatoo dreaming, I grabbed my mom, under the guise of having to purchase bird formula, and dragged her to the store. I had $500 in my pocket, and I couldn't wait!! I walked in, and walked right up to him and I said "Is Bubbles here?!", and he looked surprised and said "No, she's not, she's in Singapore." He looked almost as sad as I'm sure I did. She had been sold and shipped over seas, and I felt absolutely horrible. I knew I would have loved that little bird better than anyone else could. He tried to console me, by introducing me to her sister, who was still there. She was also quite lovely, but it wasn't the same. I couldn't get her out of my head, even after that.

About a month ago, my boyfriend and I were in Virginia. There are two amazing bird stores that we always visit when we are down there. As we were walking around, we kind of got separated in this huge store, and I could hear him calling me. When I found him, he was standing there, talking to a young girl, who had the most beautiful little Citron Crested Cockatoo on her shoulder. The bird defied every negative thing you ever hear about cockatoos. She was calm and sweet, and the girl let me pet her and hold her. My heart was melting again.

After we left, we were driving and we saw the most pimped out car driving next to us. It had horrible ripped up tint, a mis matched half primer, half paint job, and $10,000 rims. We were laughing, and as the car accelerated, I saw the license plate, and it said KNUCKY B. I was like "THAT'S IT!! Knucky is probably short for Knuckles, and Knucky B. would be an AWESOME name for a cockatoo!!!" My boyfriend who is also into funny names agreed.
Two weeks ago, I walked in to the store where we have gotten all of our birds........... you know, to buy formula. There she was. In the middle of a cage with umbrellas and sulphers, a little Citron Crested Cockatoo....... I spent the rent money this time.

That's such a good story!! Congrats on your new baby! No judgement here...I'm a first time bird owner who bought a goffin's cockatoo on a whim (literally tried to hold all the sulfurs they had in the store because I thought they were the CUTEST things ever but they were all freaking out. Then someone showed me the goffin's and I was not impressed until the one worker was like someone put a deposit on this bird and then switched to get two smaller birds come meet her. As soon as I did she jumped to me and curled up in my lap. That was that! I put down a deposit that day and brought her home 6 months later. Sometimes it just kind of happens. I'm pretty sure a lot of people would give me a lecture on that experience and acquiring a cockatoo as a first bird. As long as you have the dedication (you sure seem it) and the will to do whats best for them, I think your heart is in the right place and it will work out in the long run.

Best to you and your new baby :)
