Ok so i got a call this morning from a friend, she was telling about a guy that was in need a placing a Double yellow Amazon fast. He got the baby and just can not handle it with his work load and kids and wife and so forth ( people really need to think these things throught more ! ) WEll i have been wanting a friend for Sophie for sometime now so she called me. On talking with the guy, the bird is 7 or 8 months old and is friendly with everyone (so far) does not know the sex of the bird, which is ok. But i have no clue on how to go about introducing the baby to Sophie which inturn is really just a baby herself at 1 1/2. Sophie Is VERY spoild ! so i know this will not be an over night thing and may take months, but i think in the long run it will be good for her to have a friend and maybe even make her a happier bird.?.? I guess thats where i need the advice. Do i show i Sophie the little one ? what do i do if she hates the baby ?

I currently have a B&G Macaw, a Harliquin Macaw, a Goffins cockatoo, a sulphur crested cockatoo, a scrappy head, and 2 Congo African Greys
Introducing 2 birds is a slow process. When you bring the new bird in have the cage ready and leave him in the cage with the door closed so he can feel secure and look around and get used to his new environment. Place him where the 2 birds can see each other and get to know the other exists. You may want to leave the new bird in cage for a day then you may just open his door and let him come out when he feels comfortable. Guaging how fast to expose them to each other out of the cage is a matter of how the 2 birds behave. Just take it slow and make sure both birds feel secure. Don't leave the 2 birds out on their own for a while as the may scuffle a little establishing their order, but birds have a good way of working out their territory and friendships. Since both birds are young and handle well, you should have no problem. Just be patient and slow.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
First, I would find out the history on the baby.

If it's a solo bird, then chances are it hasn't been exposed to anything, and less of a quarantine concern.

Then, it's an inexact science. Some amazons love company. Others see another amazon as a "territorial intruder" and will try to drive them out.

Depends on the bird.

My zon is out and about trained. I took her with me, and we "visited" first.

That doesn't mean it would work out. But it helps to know if your bird tries to go into an instant "I KILL YOU!" mode, chances are it's not such a good idea.

Ask the guy for vet / test records, helps with some confidence you are not bringing anything into your home.

As for Sophie liking a friend.... birdman had a good point for first meeting. Every bird is different, Ivory is terrified of any bird, even my tiny budgie is a monster that is out to eat her.

Good luck with whatever you decide!! Look forward to pics if you do adopt him :)

Welcome fellow Nashville person! :)

Where he get the baby from??? If it doesn't work out with you I can be of assistance. As either I would keep him (maybe cause we rescue and my partner must approve) or I know 3 other loving homes he can go to. Very good homes that I approve!

Well so far so good with the baby Amazon ! my only concern is they have cliped her wings so sort that she drops like a rock to the bottom of her cage if she looses her balance at all so i put her perces lower . but if and when she wants to come out and play i fear she will fall and hurt her self. How long does it take for there wings to grow back from being clipped ?

P.S. i did place Sophie in a different section of the house till we get the ok from the vet tests !

Glad it's working out so far!

How fast the wings will grow back depends entirely on where the bird is in its "molt cycle." If he/she is due for a molt, then the feathers will come back sooner...if not, it could take several months. Severe wing clips make me so angry!

In Livingston? Your in Nashville right? There's a closer vet in Nashville that specializes in birds.

Yes they are in Livingston Lol When i moved here someone said they was really good so i started going there with Sophie. We are going to be moving to knoxville soon within the next year or so.

The Baby Did GREAT over night !!! this morning when i talked to him/her they didnt even growl at me LOL I think we are making good progress. We have picked two names once we find out what sex the baby is, if its a baby girl we will name her Khaleesi , if a little boy we will name him Tyrion.
i will try and get some pics of the baby today
