Hello...

I just got a lovely Triton a few days ago and thought I would join this forum. My bird (Dolly) is only 8 months old per the breeder she was purchased from. Overall she has been wonderful so far and we have no complaints. However, I do have a quick question...

At what age do Tritons stop acting like 'baby' birds? We noticed that she hasn't been taking much if any water in the first 24 hours, so we tried a quick plastic feeding syringe and she went after it like a little chick! Is this normal at 8 months of age? She also doesn't squawk loudly, but will mostly sit and make long whining or squeaking noises, very much like a very young bird.

As far as eating is concerned, she is doing just fine on her own. She eats a mix of fruit and veggies, pellets, treats...all on her own. It's only the drinking water, or lack of it that is concerning.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated....thanks!

She sounds like she is still baby whining for food. Do you weigh her every morning? This is very important to make sure she is gaining. As far as water, I would not offer from a syringe, this will just confuse her and make her desire to be handfed again. Try offerring on aspoon or from a small dixie cup. She is probably drinking fime and you just aren't seeing it.

Hi Welcome to the forum.

Moving to a new home can be quite traumatic for a bird, she may be looking for comfort from the syringe as she did when being weaned. I agree with Greycloud to weigh her around the same time each morning before being fed to make sure she is eating enough and not losing weight.

Birds are not big drinkers and if she is eating lots of fruit and veges she will be getting a fair amount of fliud through her food. I would recommend taking any new bird for a vet check, especially if you have any concerns. She will still be settling in with you so just take things slowly, please keep us posted on her progress.

Thanks guys... We were able to get her 'teased' into drinking from the syringe and then put a small water dish under her which she immediately drank from. We'll be keeping tabs on her of course, but she seems to be doing quite well.

I agree that she is probably reverting to more of the baby bird behavior due to moving into a new home, at least I hope so.

Are there any specific scales that are recommended?

Sounds like you're all doing really well, great to hear. I just use kitchen scales, but anything that weighs in grams/ounces will do. I keep note of Shadow's weight each time and am more concerned with consistant weight loss. When I bought her home it tiook a while to work out what she liked to eat, initially there was a small drop in weight for a couple of days then it stabalised before she started to put on.
