It depends what kind of wood. Safe and Dangerous Woods
DEFINITLY DO NOT PAINT THE WOOD! Paint is toxic to birds and can be fatal. When dealing with birds and their toys, stay away from colouring and dyes, they can be dangerous. But you could try to dye it with kool-aid, but the colour won't be as vibrant.
