I'm planning on buying a cage in December. That means that I should begin thinking about what to put in the cage and how to arrange it. I'd like to get some cool cage set-up ideas from you Galah owners.
Please post photos of your Galah Cockatoo's cage. :)

Well, I guess I'll go first- this is Chili's current set up...

Her cage stands 5 ft tall altogether, but the enclosure part is 28"H x 31"W x 23"D with 3/4" bar spacing (1" should be the max for Galahs). I would consider this size to be the minimum for a galah, but since I'm home pretty much all the time she's not confined to her cage for very long.

She also has her grapewood gym next to it, so she has somewhere else to hang out, and then also has a window perch on the adjacent window.

Inside her cage she has a big fat grapewood perch (which I need to rotate because she's ripped all of the bark off of it and has started making grooves in it with her beak lol) I also weave newspaper through the bars to give her some privacy on her top perch that extends the width of the cage (and it's also something for her to rip up).

She also has a pedi-perch in front of her main food bowl to maintain her little tootsies...and of course her boing since she sleeps on it.

Great idea for a thread, thanks, Brittany! When are you getting your galah?

Shirre, I LOVE Chili's room! No wonder she's such a happy girl!

I like to change some things around a little bit every so often, but I recently had to move her cage away from the window because it was causing her stress.

Plus, when birds need to hide, they need somewhere to do it- and having open cage bars on all sides doesn't offer much of retreat in the time of need...so the newspaper was two-fold--- to give her a place to hide when she wants some privacy (since she's in the living room), and something to keep her occupied...I don't know if anyone noticed her peeking out from behind her newspaper "window" she made HAHHAA

Awesome cage/play area! I bet she LOVES it. ;)
I'm also going to get some sort of tree stand. Did you buy this one or make it? And is it hanging from the ceiling?? How cool!
I see that you put lots of spreadable items in there as well. By the looks of it, she likes them quite a bit!
Thank you for posting this!!

Thanks! I thought that it would help a great deal to see other Galah cages, to get some ideas from them.
Well, I will have the cage in December. Then I will begin buying toys, perches, etc. I figure that I will be ready to bring one home a little after April of next year. :) Not too much longer now!! :D

The grape wood gym I made myself, and hubby mounted eye screws in the ceiling joists so it can hang using SS cable. She also has an apple wood one in our bedroom that I made

Hanging gyms work better in our household because my toddler doesn't try to mess with them lol

Yes- she LOVES to shred things...paper, wood, anything that's easily destroyable and makes a huge mess lol

ooh, I'd love for my girl to have her own "tree" hanging from the ceiling. My dog wouldn't be able to mess with her if she was up there (assuming she'd go or stay up there, she'd probably prefer to annoy the dog and try to eat my stuff, as per usual.

One thing to keep in mind is that they have HUGE wingspans for their size, and many like to flap around and get crazy in their cages. Ideally they should have enough empty space in the cage to spread their wings fully. :)

This is Pinky's new cage that I put together last night...bear in mind he doesn't move around much and he seems to find the smaller bars easier to climb up - he also has started using the bottom level with the wiffle ball on it and LOVES pinecones :)

It's the same size cage as our gcc but she's uber hyper and active.

If Pinky was a flyer/flapper I would have bought a much wider cage to allow wing span, but because of where his breaks are he can't extend his wings properly anyhow.

That's amazing! How did you sanitize it? Where did you find the wood? Did you buy it? I think that this is a great idea.
I do like the idea of a hanging gym. It seems safer. Maybe instead of buying a Manzanita, I'll do something like this.

It's huge! What are the dimensions of her cage (in inches)? I will be getting a cage that is 40-48 inches in width, 30-36 inches in depth, and 60-72 inches in height.

Very cute. :)
If he is happy with it, that's all that matters.

I just power washed the heck out of it a couple times and then let everything dry in my garage; the wood came from an apple tree on our property that I harvested myself- the tree itself was healthy and disease-free...it was just in the way of road construction *sigh*

If you choose to do something like this, make sure the tree is a safe species for parrots, and that it hasn't been sprayed with any chemicals. It's definitely a cheaper way to go- it costs me about $40 at the most for hardware to build something like this...so it saves quite a bit of money compared to paying retail for a java stand. My main "concern" with installing something like that for my girl is that I don't think she's stay on it. She has a little play stand which is on top of some drawers but she doesn't want to be be on it (unless she's got something yummy to eat which she's interested in eating), she wants to come over to where I am.

Flower is the same way, unfortunately! I wish she was more into play stands.

It's 64" x 32". :) I think you have a good idea of what minimum cage size is for them! :)

Ugh, you all are making me so jealous of your beautiful Galahs! I'm quite new to the avian hobby and have only had one parakeet lol. I have a cinnamon green cheek conure on hold at the bird store until the baby gets weaned. But since I've started doing research on different birds, I've gotten really attracted to the rose breasted cockatoo and their personalities! What makes things worse is there is a galah at the bird store waiting to be adopted and shes taken a shine to me..Always following me with her eyes around the store and twitching like she wants to fly to me. She even jumped off her perch and ran to me when i was interacting with my bird! Unfortunately, I don't feel i'm experienced enough for a cockatoo.. Some day though :)

Laventure - just remember a bird will pick you :) If the galah seems to have taken a shine to you, maybe that's who is supposed to be your new flock member??

Do some research, as much as you can and ask lots of questions here.

Pinky is my second galah - my first Bailey, was put to sleep at 16 weeks because his stomach muscles never developed so he couldn't actually digest. Its been Hmmm 4 years I think since Bailey was PTS, and we've just adopted Pinky...who is a law unto himself!

The biggest thing I've learnt is be firm, be kind and be patient :)
