As some of you know, Several weeks ago I started wondering if Popeye was actually a male as we had been told. Monday morning I ordered a sample kit for DNA testing. I chose the feather test because in spite of working for a vet for three years, I just hate the thought of making a bird bleed on purpose. I was on my way out to do errands and was running late. I checked the mail and found the sample kit. It occurred to me that next week is Thanksgiving and I should probably get the feather sample in the mail today. I thought I'd just run back inside and grab the feathers, fill out the form and send it on it's way to the lab.

Hahaha. I went back inside, quickly did the paperwork, read the instructions. You have to send freshly plucked feathers, four of them. I knew that, makes sense, right? The detailed instructions promised this would not harm my bird. I took Popeye out of his cage, he needed a hug as always, and placed him on his stand. I read the instructions and the promise to him. He was confused to start with, because he had just been confined to his cage a few minutes before. Good thing I was in a hurry or I would have talked myself completely out of collecting the feather samples. I felt like a MONSTER. I gave him a piece of papaya, chose a feather and used the band-aid method. He didn't flinch or squawk or drop his papaya or even seem to notice. I did it three more times. While I was plucking feathers, my darling quaker was dancing on her perch, saying, Give Up, You're Wearing Me Out, and Be A Good Boy. I told her she was lucky I already knew her gender. I played catch with Popeye to make sure he was okay, gave him a couple of extra hugs to make up for the awful betrayal and went to do errands.

After driving alone for half an hour the guilt was really getting to me. At the first pet supply store I visited, I bought the biggest toy I could find. I did the rest of my shopping and rushed back home to see about my baby. Apparently the whole event hurt me far more than it hurt him.

For me? Thanks Mom!

And just for fun, in case anyone wants to see how quickly a U2 can trash a clean cage. Right after the daily cleaning.

Ten minutes later. Popeye does this every evening when he goes back into his cage.

And his pretty gray crest after wrecking his cage.

Haha I made mother do the nail clipping for the DNA test on Loki. I couldn't purposely hurt her even though I knew it wasn't that bad.

Popeye doesn't even look like he remembers anything happened:D

Popeye is just so freakishly photogenic! He seems to be posing in almost every pic he takes! Hahaha!

And poor you, Allee, so guilt-ridden even as Popeye went about his/her business, completely heedless.

Looking forward to hearing those results!!!

I love Popeye! He's such a character - somehow, I think he'd get on famously with my Dominic. I can just imagine them swapping stories of their nefarious activities. :D

I didn't mean to Allee, I promise, but I laughed pretty hard at your description of feeling so guilty about what you did to sweet Popeye that you decided to get him a gift. :D

Yes, 'he' is SO very photogenic!!! Seeing 'him' at the bottom of the cage like this...hmm....You may be on to something for thinking 'he' may not be so masculine, HAHAHAHAH. :54:

Awesome pics Allee!:D Don't feel too bad, I read up on the DNA tests and I read that most of the time they don't even react. If it actually hurt I'm sure they would respond (mine would by taking off my finger:eek:). Can't wait to hear the results on Popeye!! How long do you have to wait?

BTW, my mom went to the fabric store yesterday and was going to pick me up a couple bigger hoops...guess what I will attempt to make with those??:30: Your swing of course!!:09:

Thank you so much, Everyone! I'll pass the compliments along to Popeye!

Wendy, I'm glad we made you laugh. :)

Stephen, Popeye loves the camera, he poses then pauses until he hears the click.

Trish, I bet Dominic and Popeye could have quite the conversation.

Leanna, I know the feather pulling didn't hurt at all, Popeye gets his feelings hurt easily, he would have pouted all afternoon. The sample kit took five days to arrive, so five days back to the lab, then 24 to 48 hours for the results to be posted on line and they will also send him or her a certificate. I will be so shocked if Popeye is a male! I'll have to buy him a new play stand to make up for the unnecessary test. I can't wait to see Peanut's swing. Of course, you'll have to make swings for all your birds. Have fun and post pics.

Aww, thank you critterman! I've read your posts and seen pics of beautiful Ziggy, I love the red bellies. The toy in the photo came from a local Ag Mart that sells a few parrot supplies. You should be able to find a much bigger selection of toys for Ziggy. Most pet stores carry more medium sized toys than small or large ones. Have you checked out My Safe Bird Store, IMO they have the best toys and their prices are more reasonable than any of the pet shops. Here's a link for you.

Awww, Popeye really knows how to play her Mommy:) She will be begging for you to pull more feathers so she can get a new toy every day!
I think the DNA is going to say female:)
The pic of Poppy in the bottom of the cage is priceless! Please give that sweet baby a big kiss form her Auntie Terry:)

Hahaha! Aunt Terry, I'm shocked! Are you suggesting your niece or nephew is a little spoiled? I don't think Popeye's concerned at all with the test results. New toys, though, now that's important. I kissed him or her for you. :)
