Lucy the Umbrella Cockatoo
Today Lucy was on her perch and my son (he is 4) and I were lying on my bed watching a movie and we both dozed off... I never imagined the scenario that followed... Lucy climbed down somehow and I awoke to find her creeper standing over my son on the bed. He is already fearful of her and he began to cry as I was trying to get her to step up. So she bit him. On the eyelid, he is thankfully ok getting away with just a mark. I grabbed her and threw her away from him (sorry it was my initial reaction... She is fine not hurt at all landed in the laundry basket full of clothes) she then regrouped and ran over for another attack. I then grabbed a blanket and scooped her in it then took her to her cage and covered her up. I never thought she would do that... I of course didn't mean to fall asleep with the bird out... I feel like such a jerk not only to her but my son! I'm pretty sure it's going to make the husfriend freak out and demand she be rehomed. The whole thing was my fault... I feel like a jerk. I just hope I can convince him to let her stay... Ugh I'm the worst. I don't know what to do anymore to curb her extreme jealousy. I Jane been working with her and she loves my sister but hates everyone that isn't me or my sister (which is actually a step in the way of progress) anyway... I'm a jerk

Update: the husfriend didn't freak out he knows i love her so we decided when she is out the kids can't be in the same room. I think that is a workable solution. I am so glad jack is fine his eye is fine it didn't even bleed. Lucy is fine i checked her over and gave her new toys and fruit so she will be content to stay in her cage for the evening. Ugh what a day.. ..

You aren't a jerk. Accidents happen. I know you are scared. Especially about the husfriend. Hopefully he won't say that she has to be rehomed but he might... Your reaction is normal. His reaction will be normal.

You say Lucy bit him on the eyelid. Is the eye okay? Please have it checked out if your son starts to act like his eye is bothering him.

You aren't a jerk. I am sorry you are going through this right now. Everything will be okay - even if you have to rehome Lucy.

Oh I checked his eye a billion times it was the eyebrow and lid and it just looks like a red fingernail mark on the lid thank God! The husfriend responded better than I thought he said he knows I love her so in the future the kids can not be in the room with her if she is not caged. I absolute agree with that statement. It was so scary he could have lost his eye or worse luckily she didn't immediately attack him when she got on the bed that could have been so bad. Lesson learned, she is in time out i hung some new toys in her cage and gave her fruit and a good once over to make sure she was ok. I honestly never even thought of this scenario i never fall asleep watching a movie with the lights on. .. I didn't think she could get down without me hearing her either.. Apparently she is a ninja.. . This jealousy is crazy.

The jealousy is really bad with the U2s. Mine didn't attack my cats she just screamed. She would literally chew a hole in her cover after I had covered her for the night and scream when she saw the cats crawl up in my lap. I had a family friend who wanted another U2 and so she went to their house to live and all are very happy. But oh my, they are such a sweet bird and they love to cuddle.

I'm glad the husfriend responded kindly. The rules you have set in place are reasonable. They will save everyone. I'm also glad that Lucy lovingly bit your son. She was probably checking him out to see what all the fuss is about that you make over him. :p

Don't be so hard on yourself.

No.

You were just tired. It happens...

Tell hubby not to over react. It will get dealt with in due course, over time.

These things happen, even with great moms. If it wasn't the bird, he would have scraped his knee, shoved something up his nose or any of the million other childhood "traumas" we all experienced:)

If it makes you feel any better, I grew up with a cockatoo who was after me for blood too. Once of my earliest memories was my dads G2 hanging off my cheek and me running around the house screaming bloody murder. My parents were MUCH more diligent about supervising Alfie around me from that point on. My dad still has him 20 something years later, and I grew up loving parrots:) If nothing else, getting bit (more than once by more than one bird) growing up made me quite prepared for anything Kiwi dished out. I'm glad your husband didn't freak out and was able to come to a fair resolution with you about Lucy:)

My daughter has naturally curly hair.

The only time she ever got nailed by a bird was my super bonded BFA, who launched over to her shoulder, promptly got his feet entangled in her hair, and BOTH daughter and bird went into a panic attack causing daughter to get nipped several times...

But hey, HER macaw also took my finger down to the bone...

Life goes on. It didn't leave a scar. Just a scare.

Oh it wasn't a love bite she would have really hurt him had i not grabbed her. She came back for more hell bent on getting him. This is the second person she has tried to get fortunately I'm fast enough to see it coming it's just silly this has to even be a thing but alas this is part of why I love her so much. ..

So let her be mad. I just laugh to myself when I see two year olds throwing a tantrum. :D They are so funny to watch. It doesn't mean I don't feel for the parents who are embarrassed but watching a tantrum is really kind of funny. (Ok, I may have a sick kind of mind as to what is funny.)

You aren't the only one! She is not improving... She has decided to be super difficult. I have 2 choices... Allow the over bonding and jealousy or listen to her scream incessantly every time she hears my voice. I am just going to allow the bonding. It's easier.

Yeah that sounds like a jealousy issue. Glad they child and bird are ok...I have seen an incident where an parrot took an eye out of a child (3 years old) in Kalamazoo, MI. I had to have an MRI, when it got pushed back as they brought this child in..awful site. But it dose happen unfortunately. The birds do not fully understand, yet they are usually rehomed or worse.
