Galah Cage... What To Choose?

EDIT: How sad is it that the former English teacher posted this as "What to Chose"? I really need to read stuff before I post.

So I put a down payment on a Galah from Colorado Cockatoos. He shall join the flock in mid June. I am browsing cages for him (as well as keeping an eye out on Craigslist, but most of the cages--even the large ones--are smaller than what I want.) Ideally I want a cage at LEAST 40" long by 30" wide, but many of the ones I've liked had bar spacing over an inch (aka the Prevue cages).

I am considering the Pilani Extra Large double bird cage, but I like to keep my birds in the living room and it is pretty darn big! I would have to move Sammy's cage and put him where Sammy is just to fit! (Sammy is against a long wall. All the other walls have doors or something that make them too small to fit a 64" cage unless I get rid of a curio cabinet.) However, if that would be the best home for him, I am willing. It's 64" by 32" by 70" and about $900.



I am also considering the Kauai Kastle at 36" by 26" by 64", but I am not sure this is big enough for a Galah to have fun foraging on the ground. It's about $500.



I've also considered the King's Play Pen combo for about $500. It is 40" by 26", bigger but still not as big as I would like. Plus is only comes in green or blue and I REALLY want white. I figure if I am going to lay out big monies for something I'm gonna have in my freaking living room for fifty years then I should get the color I want.



I could also try and get a 30" by 40" macaw cage from the Kookaburra shop in Dallas and then they would give me 20% off all of the stuff I need to fill it, but I would be buying the cage at full pet store price (whatever that is--their latest cage order hasn't come in yet and they are low on cages).

Which of these do you guys like best? Also, does anyone have some suggestions of some good cages for Galahs other than these? Cheaper is better, but not if it's smaller. I am not going to jump into anything since I have so long until baby comes home and something MIGHT appear on Craigslist. I just want to do right by my Rosie, so I am leaning toward the first cage, but that is very expensive and very big. My living room would need rearranging for sure!

I have it set up in layers like a tree canopy with java tree branches, so she has an upstairs and a downstairs, and she makes use of all of it.

A few members have the first cage you posted and it looks like an amazing cage, but Alice seems more than happy in the cage she has so I don't think it's imperative you have something that big if it's a problem fitting it in.

Here's a 40x30 A&E Playtop for less than $500.00

Shop around, there's lots of them out there. I'd go with a 40x30 playtop if I were you, and look at that, this one even comes in white! That's what I've got mine in, other than my greenwing, whose in a kings double macaw european dometop.

Bad English teacher, who now gets a curve or credit, lol!!!! No worries.i personally do not like the King's Play Pen because of the multi level roofs. I looked at this style a few months back but felt a skiddish bird may run to the upper tier making it hard to bend an arm to get to the bird, making it an escape haven. Good luck shopping.

I agree that the huge cage isn't necessary, and that the ones suggested are the way to go. My galah just sits, she isn't all "climby" and all over the place. She does move about, and sit on her "stuff", but she is very sedate and "sitty". The pair up at the shop also just sit there, their cage isn't that big. They move about and come over to say hello, but they aren't all flitty and climby and needing a lot of room to leap about in. IMO. Especially when they aren't stuck in there the whole time, but out on their playstand/s. They vary in size, but my girl isn't a big bird. She's got a decent wingspan but she isn't always sticking her wings out either. She just sits with her wings in, unless we are dancing, or she sticks one out while she preens.

www.mybirdstore.com They sell A&E cages, but they're not uber cheap. However, since you have time, I'd sign up for their email list because you'll get regular email offers and coupons. I purchased 2 cages from them that way, saving 30% on each one, and shipping was free.

I bought Venus' cage off of Amazon, link is below. I bought it because I wanted to match Buddy's cage and I did it but the colors are different. No matter the fit together by the window, they are no huge but Venus doesn't spend a lot of time in her cage. She plays on both play tops, hops from top to top, runs track around both cages but she sleeps and eats in her cage. I bought Buddy's at the flea market and spent $250 on it. Venus' was $120 plus $50 shipping totaling $170, $80 less than buying from a shop. It was easy to put together and the quality is excellent. Check out Amazon if you haven't.

I Haven't a clue. I am not affiliated with them in any way, and I haven't bought any cages in many years. (Though mine will be due for an upgrade in the next few years.)

My method for shopping once I found what I was looking was google a&e 40 x 30 playtop and then going with the cheapest one I found... double checking that against ebay, and amazon to see where I can get the same product the cheapest.

Well I ended up getting the double Macaw cage from King's Cages for my galah! I got ten percent off with their Twitter10 coupon, so it came out to be $775. Not too bad for such an enormous cage!

Ooh that will be a nice "mini-aviary"! Knock on wood, but I've always been satisfied with my King's Cages.

I would personally go with the first one out of those choices. I have a galah and started with a 36" x 28" playtop and it was just way too small. I was constantly frustrated at the lack of space I had for perches, toys, and for her to move around, so I eventually got her a 64" x 32." The double macaw cage, while most would tell you is not necessary, I feel is perfect. I would even go bigger if I could. There's just enough space for her to move around and for me to have different play and perching areas for her.

Here are some pictures of it...it's set up a little differently now but it gives you an idea of what you can do with the space.

It wasn't terrible, but you can see once I got a few perches in there she had limited space to move around. Since she's in her cage a lot, I felt that it wasn't big enough for her. For a bird that spends less time inside the cage it would have been okay.
