Hi there,
Ziggy, our Umbrella Too, is constantly throwing off feather dust. which I understand is normal for a too. To anyone k now of a way to help mimimize the amount of dust in teh house. We have tried using an expensive portable Hep filter machine with little success. SHould we bath her with frequency to hopefully minimize the cast off dust or is frequent bathing not recommended? if frequent bathing would seem ok to do, how often is too often? We understand it's an indication of a healthy bird when dust is cast off. But honestly, I'm dusting every day. ANy ideas greatly appreciated.
My hubby had Ziggy before we were married. I'm a clean freak, but I am certainly willing to adjust. I'm ONLY looking for some help. I love our zig so much. She is part of our family.I'm sure all of you can understand where I'm coming from.
Thanks for any help,
Liz

My Too gets a bath every other day or so, plus the baths she takes in her water bowl. Frequent baths help with the dust and improve feather and skin condition. I use an air filter and wipe the cage down almost daily. Lots of vacuuming...

Bathing her, misting her, etc. Giving parrots moisture is pretty essential to lessen dust. You have to remember that they come from the rainforest -- it's like a sauna in there! You can also put a suction cup perch in your shower, and whenever you take a shower, let her perch. MOISTURE!! ;)

I personally use a Coway air filter. I personally love this brand, lol. You don't have to always change the filters either. Just vacuum it, which makes it a lot cheaper. And I've heard that the vacuum noise can also stimulate their wants for a good shower or bath. You can even set up a perch in your shower and turn on the water! There are tons of videos of macaws just showering under a direct shower head. I think a cockatoo is similar in size so it should be okay. If not, you can ease the pressure. Most shower heads have that option. If you can't, you can put your hand in the way and let the water that flows off your hands on the cockatoo. It's a great bonding session too! :D

We have so many birds and two dogs that we must be immune. I haven't noticed dust on Rocky.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Nothing wrong with daily baths. It improves feather condition and keeps dander down to a minimum... Plus most birds like it!

Exactly.

Nothing wrong with even daily showers. And most toos love it. And a good air filter helps.

It will decrease the volume of dust, but you will still have a daily cleaning to do.
