Grey IRN baby - Coming home July 2015
Life is crazy busy!!! I havent been able to get onto the forum in quite awhile, but with summer coming, hopefully life will slow down a little and allow me time to post more.... Anyhow, I thought I would post an update on my RosaGirl. When she came to us in March of 2014, Rosa was quite sad. Her previous family loved her very much, but was very poorly equipped to deal with her neediness. This lead to Rosa becoming cage bound, plucked and very lonesome. She had bald spots on her chest and wings, and on her body where she did have some feathers, was only down. Her wings were nipped pretty badly, she was not the worst I had seen, but it was obvious she was not healthy and happy. Her family bred many small dogs and cats, and as such were very busy with little time to really spend with her.

This photo was taken a couple of days after she came home:

Even in that photo, less than 18 months ago, she looks so small to me!

I took her home, and placed her in a HUGE cage with some toys, smack in the middle of our living room. A HUGE change from her teeny cage in the kitchen (despite large bar spacing it wasnt fit for any bird to live in.) She had constant exposure to our family, and her cage door was left open for her to come out as she pleased. She took advantage right away, and came out to snuggle and be loved on often. We settled into a schedule and it really was like she was meant to be a part of our family. She is sweet, sweet, sweet. She never yells unless she is well and truly startled, preferring to talk sweetly to get attention.

She came to us on pellets, thankfully and still enjoys those. She didnt eat anything fresh, and is still very fussy about fresh food, but we're working on it! She will actually steal fruit off of my snack plates now. Proof:

She is also not opposed to a colder treat now and then, especially if Daddy is eating it.:D

While she is no longer truly plucking, she does fuss a bit too much with her feathers and has damaged the follicles to the point her feathers wont ever come back. Her body is covered in down, with a few sparse feathers here and there. Her chest is bald, but you cant tell unless she is wet. The tip of her wings also each have a bald spot, but she is mostly allowing them to grow in properly.

While I wouldnt care of she was bald, it makes me sad and frustrated that she went through all of that with a family who didnt help her as much as they could have. Just some time, some toys would have made the world of difference. Regardless, she is mine now, and I plan to cherish her a good long time.
This is actually how we spend quite a few of our evenings:

Now, that its warmer though, she is generally snuggled under my chin or the crook of my arm.

Rosa has been such a gem, meant for me I think. She's special, and wonderful and while I hate that she was unhappy, she is happy now, and thats all that matters. I dont blame her prior family that much, I know life is crazy sometimes. I just wish it had been different for her thats all. But then, she wouldnt be mine if it had been would she? :white1:

Anyhow, 15 months in and I cannot imagine my life without her. She is getting a wee IRN brother in a few weeks, and I hope she will be happier still with someone around who 'speaks her language' so to speak. They dont have to be besties, and she'll never be pushed aside for her birdie brother, I hope he brings her a sense of feathered companionship. Her wee bro is (hopefully) somewhere in this cute little monk-headed baby pile, still waiting on DNA results. :)

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
What a difference approximately 1.5 years makes!! You've done a fantastic job socializing Rosa!

The size differential with your upcoming IRN is significant, but as long as they aren't hostile you'll be happy!

Thanks Scott! Yes, I dont expect Ill trust them to hang out together for a very long time, if at all. Rosa lived with a female DYHA in her previous home, and while they didnt 'fight' they didnt really enjoy eachother very much either. I still think it will be good for her to have another bird in the house, even if he lives on the other side of the room. :D

Ive put a lot of time and effort into her, and whiles its been mostly 'easy', I'm happy that I've been able to help her find happiness, again. Her feathers are proof that our family has been as good for her as she has been for us. <3

Rosa looks beautiful,

not to be a party pooper, but that pic of her over top of a bowl of chocolate ice cream

chocolate & dairy, a double no no for cockatoos.

Rosa looks amazing! Nothing quite like a too cuddle huh? My inlaws next door have one, and so it's nice to have a 'big bird fix' occasionally. I have to admit, whilst I'm happy to bird sit, it's a relief to be able to hand him back at the end of their trip.

Congratulations on the ringneck, what an awesome pair of birds :)

It's something shes gotten a grand total of 3 times, and it was a teeny taste. Its a risk I am extremely comfortable with taking. :)

Thanks everyone. She really is a joy!

Kiwibird, Im not sure yet, we're waiting to see if we've got a male in there! If we dont have a male then it could be any of them! Hahaha!! Ill meet them closer to home time and make my choice then. Exciting!

His Angel,

I wasn't bashing you, my U2 goes crazy when she sees me drinking coffee, she actually fly's off her perch & sneaks a sip from time to time.
