The day is finally here! I have put a deposit down for the most beautiful little parrot in the world.

Those who know me know that whilst I get to work with birds every day, I haven't the time or money for a parrot of my own.

That is no more!

Come September (or whenever she weans) I will be the proud new parront of
Ash!

(Her foot isn't splayed, she's just on the slippery floor)

We're not sure if she's a girl or a boy yet, but I'm kinda hoping for a girl, so I've been calling her a 'she' in an attempt to appease the gender gods ;)
Of course I won't mind either way.

I've already got her cage, just need to set up her perches and toys.

I'll put a few more photos of her in the next post so you can all see how adorable she is :D

OH MY GOODNESS !!!! HOW WONDERFUL :) Thanks for sharing pictures [perfect name]. Are they similar to white Toos ? I know my Galah is very different than my white Toos.

Thank you :D
I figured even if she turns out to be a he, Ash will still work as a name :)

Honestly, I think they're nothing at all like white toos!
My experience with sulphur-crested cockatoos has shown them to be very demanding, dependent, talkative and noisy, whereas black toos barely talk at all, like to cuddle but are happy to play by themselves, and usually aren't noisy.

How exciting for you! And I can't think of a more experienced person to bring home one of the less common (pet) cockatoo species. Did your zoo experience influence your decision on what species to get? Are the black cockatoos more common as pets where you are or are they still pretty rare (they are very very rare here in the US)? How big will Ash get? S/he looks quite big already!

Wow, she's beautiful! I've never seen one of those in person, only in pictures and on videos at bird club. Looking forward to your updates.

That's my dream bird, problem is in the USA, they sell for about $15,000.00 - $20,000.00, to rich for my pockets so it will have to stay a dream.

good luck, please post pics from time to time so we can see that beauty.

Thank you everybody, I'll be sure to keep you all updated once I bring her home :D

Yes, she's a red-tailed black cockatoo.

It was really my experience with other RTB2s that made the decision for me, I've hung out and cared for a few before, and they're such softies!
They're still not common pets, but they're MUCH cheaper here, Ash cost me $1500 AUD. You also need an advanced wildlife licence to own one (to keep people from taking them from the wild, and also because some subspecies are endangered)
She is the banksii subspecies, so she should get to around half a metre long, and very stocky - similar to the white cockatoos :)
She still has a bit more growing to go!
