We CANNOT deal with the little monster any more. I have no idea what became of him.. He was a sweetheart when I adopted him and now he is Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde.
He cannot be trusted,and Arleen and I are now fearsome of trying to handle him.
Yesterday I let him out of "jail" <that's what we call it now,coz he can't be trusted to be out with us>. He was on the rooftop of his cell,and was giving me kisseys,and loving head scrathches,doing typical 'too dances and hopping all over the place.
I put my hand down for him to step up,which he promptly did,and in an INSTANT had both of his beaks firmly imbedded in my index finger :11:,hanging from it,while blood poured down my arm.

Poor Arleen,she is petrified to even open his door to retrieve his water or nummy bowl,coz he will RUN at her trying to bite.

And now my AMY,is starting to cuss She is a very prim and proper young lady,has NEVER yelled/screamed,or swore,and now she is starting to talk like a trucker! And Arleen and I have heard her yell at the Cockatoo Man "SHUT UP"!! because of his relentless screaming.

I have been in contact with a local avian rescue who would love to have him,and even though it is breaking my heart,I truly believe it is the best thing to do,for all 5 of us :31:
Just waiting for them to call me back...sighhhhhhhhhh

Sad day - my thoughts are with you. Tough and brave decision to make.

This wouldn't be the first large too to turn on somebody, unfortunately...

A close friend of mine had his U2 for more than a dozen years, and it was very much his baby... then one day, the bird decided to go psycho, and not only refused to allow his person to handle him, he actually actively attacked him every single chance he got.... as in bite wounds requiring stitches.

There was no trigger that we were aware of. He was always a well treated, well behaved bird, until he just suddenly wasn't anymore...

It became a safety issue for the people involved, and removed from that situation, also for god only knows what reason, he reverted back to his old sweet self...

Again, no trigger that we know of.

All I can conclude from that is "sometimes it happens."

There is a little "Sybil" in every large too, I think...

But Mark, he ISN'T a large 'too! a lil scrawny Goffins!

and I am deeply concerned that he will affect sweet,loveable Amys disposition :11: I have had her going on 30 yrs now,and I <we> could not ask for a better 'zon, I can't,and will not risk the chance.

Frankly, THE WORST too I ever worked with was a spoiled bird syndrome Triton... also not a very large too... just very psychotic!!!

This must be so hard for you, but sometimes "it is what it is, " and you can't do anything else. Too bad there isnt someone in you area who would take him, maybe he would do better as a single bird?

Birds like that need very experienced keepers, almost a parrot behaviorist level of experience and know-how with birds. Trouble is, most people like that already have more than their share so have no openings. I think some parrots are just better with other birds in a huge aviary with minimal human involvement. I know there are places like that. I hope your Jonesy finds a home like that were he can be content. I have been following his story and had hoped something would work out for you both. He sounds like a very challenging bird to keep as a pet. I know you tried. I'm sorry it didn't work out.

Really sorry to hear Jonesy flew off the deep end. You and Arleen tried and gave him many chances, but sometimes it just doesn't work for reasons you'll never know. I can understand your frustration as it was beginning to affect Amy in a negative way, and that is a red line you cannot cross.

Wish I had s spot for him, as I adore Goffins!

I'm so sorry about this Jim. I don't post on your threads since I don't have a too, but I've been following the cockatoo man. You certainly gave it your best, and are really to be commended gory our efforts. Sometimes it just isn't the right fit.

Jim, I know you didn't give in to this decision easily. You really tried to make it work with this individual and your family. Sometimes we find we just aren't the best fit. Of course we never intend to give them up, but anyone who uses the term "forever home" and comdemns those who fall short, are ignorant IMO.

As Oowl mentioned, how about trying to find a sanctuary situation, rather than another pet adoption? He might be a different bird in someone else's home, but he just might be one of those who find a greater sense of peace being in an aviary setting with his own kind all day. Jones actually gets along with Amy. One night Arleen and I were at the kitchen table playing cribbage. Jonesy was on my shoulder and Amy on Arleen's.
Jonesy walked down my arm,hopped onto the table,hopped over the cribbage board,and climbed up Arleen's arm to where Amy was sitting.
I was posed to lurch up and grab him in an instant if anything was going to happen!
To our surprise,Amy and The Cockatoo Man went beaky to beaky,very gently for about 10 seconds,while Jones made little kissy sounds to Amy.
Amy proceded,VERY GENTLY,to preen Jonesy hat,only for a few moments,then Jonesy turned away,climbed back down Arleen's arm,hopped on the table,over the crib board,and back up my arm to my shoulder. We were in disbelief :11:.
We have also found him on top of Amys penthouse,on her play gym,side by side.

I have never owned,or really had any real contact with any type of 'too before.
After Smokey passed away,and me still grieving over her loss,and really considering getting a BABY grey..D.J., <Arleens brother> had Jonesy <had him for about 21 yrs> and needed to rehome him,because Jonesy didn't see eye to eye with Pookie,the Molaccan.
DJ heard that Smokes passed and asked if I would be interested in adopting The Cockatoo Man.
I was kind of excited,having another bird,and something I never had before. I figured it was a win-win situation..Jones would get a good home and I got a new fid
Impulsive..if I had done some research beforehand I doubt that I would have adopted him..

So sorry you are having to do this. I totally understand.

Anyone who lives with a 'too knows how difficult they can be. Sometimes you can get past it, sometimes you can't. Sometimes you think you ARE past it and suddenly they go psycho on you. I have a Quaker who has psycho spells, but even though his bites hurt and even bleed, he can't possibly do the kind of damage a 'too can do. You tried. Amy was there first, and if this is affecting her quality of life to that degree, and you can't make any headway with Jonesy, there's nothing else to do but surrender. I know it's hard.
