Freya's Crying / whining

She is almost a year old and we cant get her to stop crying/whining she isn't screaming its much lower then that but as soon as you walk into a room she squats down sways back and forth and whine/crys .. She is in a room where she gets lots of attention plenty of toys and food so Im not sure what the problem is i dont want to pick her up every time she crys b/c i feel that reinforces the bad behavior but i really just dont know what to do to get it too stop its making people not want to go in the room with her

Welcome to the forum, what species of cockatoo is Freya? Depending on how long you have had her, it might be a new behavior or one learned at her previous home.

What you describe may be strictly behavioral, but you may wish to rule out potential medical issues. Has Freya had a basic "well check" with an avian vet? Cockatoos are very emotional parrots, but there are many techniques to make the relationship far more comfortable!

I'm dealing with this with one of my toos. A medium sulfur crested too. Driving me nuts. I'm sure it's driving my cats and my other birds nuts too. He has plenty of toys and things to do and undo. He has plenty of food. Plenty of flock members to talk with BUT he prefers to whine. It was suggested that it is hormones and to just try and put up with it. It is better today than it was about five days ago.

Not any real definite way to get him to stop but just know that you aren't alone. I was ready to start looking for a place for him on the internet.

Well, after much thinking (on my part) back to what changed to start Charlie's (my too) whining...and I had to go back to mid December 2015. I figured out what I thought was the problem.

Back in December I was watching my Dad's dog. Charlie liked to chase my Dad's dog. He doesn't chase my cats and doesn't chase other birds...just my Dad's dog. Although it is cute it isn't safe and I don't think a dog should under go that kind of stress, therefore, Charlie was not allowed out of his cage nor was his cage door open. It's easy to get out of a routine and once my Dad's dog was back to my dad I forgot to open Charlie's door in the mornings and evenings. UNTIL this morning. He was whining before I even got out of bed (and his cage is covered). He was whining even after I took off the cage cover and I was just in the kitchen (where he can clearly see me) cleaning the dishes. He whined until I opened the door and then he stopped. He didn't come out but he didn't whine again until I closed the door and went to work.

I know it's not completely stopping the problem because the other night he was whining sitting on a play stand looking right at me but at least he wasn't whining for 60+ minutes this morning.
