I would like your thoughts and comments please..

...with what transpired this past weekend with Jones and the rescue place..

Its kinda gnawing at me.

As I previously mentioned, I had been in contact with this place for prolly over two months,and only by emails..and it took from a few days,to several days,to get an answer.
By the time I DID hear something,MY opportunity to get The Cockatoo Man to the rescue had long passed.

I did get a call from "whomever", once,but unfortunately I was at work and didn't hear my cell ring,and when I did a redial,some answering service type machine gizmo answered to tell me I reached some sort of High School office and click "this or that" for whoever I wanted to speak to,for which I had no name to begin with <double >

So last Friday,when I WAS able to speak to someone, <sounded like a youngish male with some sort of accent> he seemed vague on giving me any information,didn't give me a call back number,or an address to bring Bonesy to,untill I received another email from him.

Now y'all know what happened..packed the guy up..braught up a house and new goodies and food etc..in sub-zero temps,on a 45 minute ride down the highway <which the goofball obviously loved,as he was stickin' his head out his pet carrier tellin' me and my buddy Joe a big story>

Only to end up in some condo complex in the middle of Hartford CT with a bunch of shady looking people walking by,gawking at us!

So the jist of this story is this..When I got Jonesy back home and unpacked,I sat down to send this "rescue" a very unhappy email. I was polite as I could be,at that time, I did voice displeasure of sitting in my car,and an unknown destination,for a period of time,waiting on "someone" to come by. I also did mention that I thought there would have been an easier,safer way,of doing this surrender,and just gave my personal opinion on how I thought their "operation" could be run more efficient! :54:

And for some strange,odd reason, I haven't heard anything back lol.

Oh yea...I did tell them I gave The Cockatoo Man,to a much more deserving,caring family..

Thoughts? Ideas?? Cuss me out??? lol

I think you did the right thing, that place just sounds shady... For all we know they're some kinda trafficking ring, who knows.

You done good with re-homing him so thank your lucky stars they didn't get him and hes re-homed and happy. Certainly don't want to cuss you sweatheart. Move on, enjoy life and Amy. Be happy!

Amy is back to her sweet self..no more crankiness from mr. loudmouth
<boy I have a bazillion names for that one lol..but kind of miss him>

Right now Arleen and I are looking into either a baby,or a rescue Grey..maybe another Timneh like Smokes was <miss her even more now >
Or maybe just let the homestead try and get back to some normalcy..if that's possible!

In my opinion, these are scammers...

Let me tell you about one of the "rescues" I volunteered with for only a few weeks (and trust me that was enough) in NorCal.

First of all, there was no actual "rescue" per se. They made a website, with a bunch of sad sack looking birds, (most of which were downloaded from sites like mytoos) then set up a link for donations, and a number to donate your unwanted bird...

They used "volunteer" labor to do all the bird care, and cleaning of cages, etc. Volunteers were also expected to "donate" toys, food, water, their homes, and their time and training... the birds they care for are Foster birds. The birds, however, belong to the rescue unless the person paying for the toys, food, and spending their time providing care, also paid an "adoption fee" to the rescue. (You had to sign a contract saying that, in order to be allowed the privilege of providing care...)

On paper, these fees go to pay for things like vet care, etc. ONLY THING IS THE PEOPLE WHO VOLUNTEERED TO CARE FOR THESE ANIMALS ENDED UP BEING OUT OF POCKET FOR THESE THINGS. Now mind you all of these birds were "surrendered" parrots. Free birds, with free cages, and often free toys as well.

SO IF THE RESCUE WASN'T PAYING FOR FOOD, OR CAGES, OR VET CARE, OR LABOR, OR RENT, OR REALLY ANYTHING... WHERE DID THE "DONATIONS" AND ADOPTION FEES REALLY GO?!

They went to pay for the guy who "owned" the rescue's (that never existed) house, car payment, utility bills, etc. He didn't actually work. He just drove around meeting people, accepting donations, stroking egos, lining up "volunteers," picking up free parrots... and keeping up appearances. Needless to say, I wasn't associated with these guys for more than a few weeks once I figured out what's going on.

I ALSO WORKED WITH LEGITIMATE RESCUES THAT REALLY DID GOOD WORK, AND NEEDED THE DONATIONS AND SUPPORT. THAT WASN'T THIS GUY... AND THAT'S THE THING WITH THESE SCAMMER OUTFITS. THEY TAKE AWAY RESOURCES FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTUALLY DOING GOOD AND NEED THE HELP!!!

ALWAYS CHECK IT OUT BEFORE WRITING THE CHECK. FIND OUT IF IT'S LEGIT... THAT'S THE LESSON.

When enough people refused to volunteer (i.e. be used and scammed) anymore, this guy suddenly found himself with a house full of birds that no one wanted, no money coming in, and no one but himself to care for them, or pay for food and care. At that point he shut down "the scam" and was forced to surrender "his" birds to a legitimate rescue.. Cuz he sure as hell wasn't gonna pay for anything. IT WAS ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. WHICH IS WHAT I SUSPECT IS THE SITUATION HERE.

Many other "rescues" out there are nothing more than Hoarders. These are mentally ill people who are taking in anything and everything because they love animals, but in reality, they have NO resources coming in to actually care for them. The animals in that situation go from the frying pan, into the fire... ending up suffering, or dead, or needing to be rescued from the rescue. Visit even one of these places and you'll know! THE STENCH IS UNGODLY!!!

And then there are the FLIPPERS... there is no rescue, they post the bird the next day on Craig's list or take them to the flea market, or what have you, and sell them for a profit. Get as much as you can for free, and see what you can get for it. The welfare of the animal is NOT a real concern, or even, a concern at all. $$$. These guys were scammers or flippers. Your bird was spared from a trip to "the mill."

IT DOES HAPPEN!!! Lesson there is check it out thoroughly before surrendering your bird!!!

ONCE YOU SIGN YOUR BIRD AWAY, HE'S NO LONGER YOURS. YOU CAN'T GET HIM BACK!!! EVEN IF THEY LIED TO YOU TO GET HIM.

This is a situation where it was best for the bird and the people to rehome... and that happens from time to time, especially with toos. WHEN it happens, THINK BEFORE YOU PLACE...

Jonesy will never know what lengths you travelled to get him to a safe and deserving home. As a lover of Goffins, Thank You for caring enough to avoid the "dump job" that sadly occurs when one gets tired of a misbehaving parrot.

I have no experience with rescues, but everyone considering rehoming a bird ought to heed Mark's advice above!

Jim thanks, it's been a bit of an upheaval for you don't you think? Enjoy Amy and see what happens - nothing wrong with normal. Could you do any holiday sitting for friends with birds whose history you trust as that would give you a bit more buzz without the permanency of actually have another?

I'm not a big Ronald Reagan fan but the "TRUST BUT VERIFY" slogan certainly rings true to me.

They probably won't rely because they don't have anything else to add.
But good on ya Yes it's time to let it go, but you wouldn't have been able to if those little niggles were at the back of your mind, especially given time with him was a rather emotional ordeal, even before the rehoming process! View the email as a 'wrapping it up' situation

Give yourself a break to enjoy Amy without drama. Nothing to stop you doing the usual breeder searching type stuff - but to be fair, you will still be grieving Jonesy in some form...
