So a few days ago I found an ad selling a moluccan cockatoo. This poor girl looked as though she had been put through hell...

http://www.parrotforums.com/members/brookeb-albums-cockatoo-picture16147-image.jpg

Well I wanted her! She was 1000$ and they told me that they wouldn't drop the price.. I asked friends and family and even added her to my gofundme... But I couldn't save it up.. I get paid on the 3rd and I asked them to please consider holding her for me... But as they put it.... "I need the money to buy my kids a smaller parrot." So I have been asking every day to see if she had been sold yet and today they told me.. AND I quote "the kid down the street traded us a sun conure for her.":(

It's really sad because I have a feeling that the "kid" that got her isn't going to be her last home... I'm also very upset because I know that conure isn't going to be much better off... Upset and sad I just couldn't do it in time... But I am willing to wait for another needy bird to pop into my life... Still wish they would have dropped the price for me...

The only birds im really looking to save right now are m2, u2, b&g or gw macaw.. I know somewhere out there is a bird that needs a good permanent home.. I have a lot more saved up now too, but I constantly see birds that are cheeper I just wasn't ready until lately... So now I have to keep looking :( and hope both the cockatoo and conure get treated right...

Brooke, unfortunately you will see a boatload of parrots in DIRE need of new homes all the time. I made the mistake and looked at CL yesterday. I immediately remembered why I despise that site so much. :54: Some of the birds I saw were mislabeled, others were obviously living in filth, some looked worse than the cockatoo you were looking to buy, AND there was even one whose owner was looking for a 'stud' service for her Amazon (since she was in 'heat')

You may be feeling bummed that this particular bird didn't work out. Please remember also, that you don't know if you and the bird would have 'clicked'.

Parrots that were either neglected and/or are in bad physical shape require a whole lot more than a clean cage, good food and TLC. Many require extensive veterinary care, too, which can quickly drain the pocketbook and/or credit cards. Just something to remember. :)

I see you now have narrowed your search. If you are serious about the larger toos, please have a look at this site: All About Cockatoos - MyToos.com

Brooke, thank you for trying to help the M2 - it sure looks like she needs help. I'm having trouble making out exactly what I'm seeing in the photo - is the bird all bloody???
Wendy's advice about checking out MyToos.com is a very good idea. The large 'toos are a HUGE undertaking. I had kept parrots for 25 years before I felt ready to take on my dream of having an M2. Make sure that you are the right home for one so that you don't accidentally become part of a bird's unfortunate history.

First off my neck hurts reading this.

The cost of that bird was $680.00 Second if anyone thinks a bird is in danger and takes the time to set up a go fund me account instead of trying to take the time to contact animal control that is just putting more damage on these poor birds .

This bird was under Medical care and improving.

Thank you for trying. The toos out there need you. It does take a different kind of person to be able to put up with a too. Do the reading but try not to let your heart get too hurt by what you read. The site Wendy sent you to is a rough read.

Rough? Perhaps so, but it's also the truth, and the truth, unfortunately, can hurt sometimes. :)

I think it is rough and heart breaking. Makes me sad when I read it. I know it is true but there are also a lot of toos out there that are good. And we have already established that there are certain kind of people who are better at having a too than others. Some are good with zons and some are good with toos...and some are good with macs.

Personally, I think everyone considering a large Too should read every word of the article Wendy posted, twice if it doesn't sink in the first time. Yes, the truth is profoundly sad, its's still the truth. There's a reason sanctuaries are filled with severely damaged birds. As Wendy mentioned, a huge cage, a good diet and the best of care doesn't undo the emotional damage or the health issues. Sometimes it takes years to get these birds back to a relatively stable place, sometimes it can't be done, by anyone, even those with the magic Too touch.

Dopey, I agree, I would far rather read success stories. Nothing makes me happier than to see a Too, fully feathered and enjoying life. Sadly, those stories are often the exception, not the rule.

Well first off someone here already told me about mytoos... The one she talks about the owners who did everything right and still ended up putting there bird to sleep worries me terribly... But I'm bipolar and I have learned to live with my issues and work through them so maybe (hopefully) I could help the bird do the same. I have read every word of mytoos.com.... If you can believe it I even took notes (writing it out helps me remember).. It's very sad and makes me worry but I honestly think I can handle it.. But that site is one reason I (on top of many) that makes me consider a macaw... But I really just want to help one I can instead of buying one.

And as for the price... That's not what she quoted me! Her ad was 1000, and she told me she wouldn't drop the price.. Damn if she was only 680 I could have gotten her! That's actually really upsetting..

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Everything about the CL ad is beyond disturbing; the emaciated image of that poor M2, spelling, cavalier attitude, etc. It would be horrifying to learn what that bird has experienced.

Toos are indeed an acquired affinity, and the subject bird dearly needs a new and highly dedicated parront.

Yeah I was thinking I should stop looking at CL but the birdsnow.com is just as bad and I'm not sure where else to look... All of the rescues are too far from me, seeing as they require a home check and going to classes just to apply for a bird. I understand why they do this but it's not really possible for me, I live in the mountains, it's a hour drive to get into Bakersfield and then 2+ hours to the rescue..
