Charlie - 13 yr old RB2
Hey guys it's me for the third time haha. So my birdie is 13 and his name was Charlie. He says hi Charlie quite a bit. Problem is, I don't like the name Charlie that much and I've gotten kind of used to associating the name Pablo with him... But I've gotten some input from a few people on here that it would be a bad idea to change his name.
So I'm opening this thread for some straight advice on the matter.

Charlie or Pablo?

Thanks guys.:)

Mae

Most of our birds are rehomes, and some came with names I didn't much like. If they could say their name, I didn't change it unless I had no choice. One of our zons came to us with a cuss word as a name, he did say it, but I changed it immediately.
I just felt like their name was familiar, and i didn't want to take that away if they actually knew and said it.

Thanks guys. I have so much thinking to do, but now I'm leaning towards keeping the name Charlie... Why do I feel like I have to sit him down and talk to him about it after work today? Haha XD

HOWEVER..just a short time ago I finally got around to having her DNA'd :54: ;) and it turns out Amy...is "AMOS"..lol
Sooooo after 26 yrs of being called Amy,do I change it to Amos?? nahhhhhhh...she'll be Amy forever.

And I like "Charlie"...its a good male name. :D

Honestly, you can call a pet whatever you want to. I call mine a variety of names that aren't his-- chicken, raptor, little nugget, etc. :D It's obviously different to having a name that the bird responds to, but if you say it enough they'll catch on. They're smarties. :)

Clyde, Quaker; Freddie, tiel; Rocky, umbrella cockatoo.
We've done it both ways. Our Quaker Jade knows she is Jade and she loves her name. So she kept it. Clyde was a stray (showed up in the yard looking for help) and we had no idea and he didn't offer any clues, so we had to give him a name. Johnny was "Snowball" to his previous family, but he didn't show any recognition or attachment to that name and I changed it to Johnny, which he took to almost immediately. Freddie and Ringo were babies without names when they joined the flock, so I just tried names on them until they indicated a preference. Rocky, like Jade, was already named and quite fond of his name, so he kept it. It sounds as if Charlie is attached to his name and my advice would be to let him keep it.

I went thru the same dilemma with Gracie. I really wanted to change it but ended up deciding to keep her name since she knew it was her name & it was familiar to her.

I do call her other nicknames but she doesn't respond to them or react the same as her own name. She uses her name in a lot of sentences she Gracie's a pretty girl, Is Gracie's a good girl?, Gracie's a pretty, good girl, Gracie go outside, I am Gracie, Gracie loves you, Gracie having fun...weee, Gracie's a good, good bird. Gracie it's her favorite word (she's a tad self focused lol) so I'm glad I kept it - it grew on me & it fits her well.

In her case she really knows shes Gracie & speaks it frequently - I may have made a different decision if it she wasn't reacting or speaking it.

Good luck with your decision.. Charlie is a cute name too :)

Christine - that's so funny because I loved the name Big Bird

We never knew Zoe's previous name s and she was only 1.5 years when we got her so she had no problem adjusting. Corky, our grey, was 15 and used his name in every other sentence so even though we really wanted to change it we kept it.

I would feel a bit bad changing a birds established name if he said it all the time and knew it was his name. However, in a case like Teery's where the poor bird had an unacceptable word as a name she had no choice but to change it. Eventually they will come to know a new name, especially if the old one isn't said anymore and ignored when the bird says it.

We were torn on changing Kiwi's name when we got him. It does not suit his personality. However, when we first got him we didn't know if he knew it or not and felt it best to keep it. We've gotten used to it over the years. I strongly suspect it is not his original name, as he doesn't really respond to it even now. He can't speak, so he can't tell us his real name. Someday I think someone will randomly say a name he recognizes and we will change it then once he lets us know;) He's Kiwi until then though (and has a million nicknames).

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Well, some birds have two names! My female Ekkie was originally named Angel, but I taught her to say "red bird, red red bird, very red bird." I can call her either Angel or Red Bird and she looks at me!

A lot of pet birds have several different names. Nicknames :). Raven has given himself a couple of his own nicknames. He often calls himself Ray, or Ray Ray (as well as Raven, he realizes that's his real name).

Alice - Galah cockatoo
Alice was originally called Rosie, but since that's also my sister's name, one of our regulars on here had a galah called Rosie and she showed no sign of responding to it (the pet shop that had her for at least 9 months discovered the name when I asked for any vet records so I doubt they called her by it)I decided to change it.

Nowadays Alice believes her name to be either 'Hey! Stop that!', 'Not for birdies!' or 'Ow!'.
