I've been spending some pre-work time with Charlie and this is what it looks like today

Thanks guys!
He gets into SO much trouble and he seems to get a kick out of running right back to where he knows he shouldn't be! I wish I had some interesting play stands or something to put up around the house so he has something TO do rather than be told NO all the time and moved or get put back in his cage. It's getting tiring!

Any advice??
In the meantime I'm letting his feathers grow back in so that maybe he can fly around a bit and get some of that crazy cockatoo energy out...

There are some awesome PVC stand ideas on pintrest, they are also easy to build. Too bad my cockatiel has become a Velcro Bird, I am also looking for ways to keep him on his play gym. Having treats there helps.

10i: thank you for the idea! I'll do some research on that. It's crazy how expensive play stands can be, especially the wood ones.

he's a handful lol. Right now he's gotten the hang of clicker training and touch training with a stick. Today we were using that to start working on coming when called, and touching other objects. He still tries to chew up the stick before touching the other object but on his last two tries he touched and picked up a ball that I was pointing the stick at.

Go to Home Depot and buy some supplies to make a PVC stand. Very easy and cheap.

The PVC pipe one on here if I remember correctly was very detailed in it's instructions. Good luck..

BTW keep well stocked with chewables for Charlie as this will lessen the biting, keep him busy, interested etc.

Thanks for the tips! So far he doesn't like chewing on toys for some reason which sucks because I have so many toys for him. He seems to only enjoy shredding furniture, door/wall material, throwing items off of shelves, and chewing small things like small sticks and q tips when offered to him. Makes such a mess! Lol

Oh dear that isnt good. Probably been allowed to do it before. Show him his toys, try a mix of wood and the ones that are finer, raffia type. Show him them and play with them yourself to engage him. You will have a very expensive time otherwise.

So when he chews on furniture and I say no and move him away or try to distract him with something appropriate and he still runs back to it several times, does he understand that is not allowed or is it just a game to him? I'm finding it hard to teach him what Not to do because he just runs right back and gets excited lol. Thanks so much for your help.

When he does something naughty, put him in the cage and lock the door. You can talk firmly to him, but don't overdo it.

This is what I would do. Show him that if he is naughty that there are consequences. Something he doesn't like, such as having playtime outside cut short.

Okay I'll try that out too. Usually I've been resorting to putting him back anyways when he's getting to be too much and I've told him no several times already.

I guess what I'm having a bit of trouble with wrapping my head around is this:
From all of my reading and youtube-watching, it seems there is a controversy between whether parrots even respond to discipline or punishment like that long term, and whether to discipline parrots by doing things like closing him in the cage when he's naughty.

I'm trying out everything that is suggested to me but I don't want to do something that doesn't reap long term results. Does that make sense? :54:
