Jailbreak thwarted

Rocky spent all morning trying to break out of his cage. Mind you, he's out all day long, but Mama is not a morning person and needs some coffee and time to wake up before entertaining a very demanding cockatoo boy. So he has to stay in his cage until I'm up to coping with him. He can see me; I'm only a couple of feet away. But in his efforts to break out, he somehow dislodged his sleeping perch, which is very heavy, and it fell to his cage floor with a mighty crash. He raised his crest and looked at it, and then at me, like, "Fix it, Mom!" Huh-uh. That would mean opening the cage before my first cup is drunk. You have other perches, and you'll just have to use one of those.

Poor Rocky! That's a serious way for the poor guy to start the morning. Poppy's crepe myrtle perches are looking pretty shabby, she doesn't understand she shouldn't chew through a perch while she's standing on it.

I get my coffee, wake up the flock and give Poppy a nutriberry every morning.

Lol! I'm usually pretty good about making sure my babies know they aren't always going to be out, but Makoa, my baby GCC, is the only one in his clutch and I'm a sucker for lonely babies. He has started to knock his toys down and then throw tantrums as well!

We have long ago given-up on locking the cage door in any kind of an attempt to hold him with in it! Our DYH Amazon, just dis-assembles the main sections of the cage and walks proudly out the side.

Rocky wasn't standing on the perch when it fell. He was sitting on his food dish, where he had been trying to open the access door (which Mama knows he can do, and therefore it is secured with a metal clip!). And Rocky also knows quite well what coffee tastes like because he will move heaven and earth to get to mine and steal a sip if I don't watch him like a hawk. Another reason he has to stay locked up until I'm adequately caffeinated.

More often than not I'm waking up Willow. She usually need poking and prodding to get her off the heated perch in the morning, lol

We're in the same boat, no point locking the cage anymore, it'll stay in better condition if we don't. If he can't open the door himself, he'll simply remove it and let it crash to the floor. He knows he has to eat breakfast before he can come out, but once he's finished eating, he lets himself out no human required. Does your zon also put himself back in at night? When he's ready for bed, Kiwi will close the door behind himself too and wait for his treat, kisses and covers so he can go to bed:rolleyes:

Free Rocky!

Know of several "free range" zons and macaws on the forum. Maybe Rocky could be the first free range too on the forum!

I doubt it, lol, I don't think they are free-range-able, haha

Me either, but you never know! If Rocky is out all day already, may not be a far stretch to let him let himself out in the morning;) However, my experience growing up with the houdini of cockatoos, I would venture to say that good judgement should be used;)

Someplace between 8:30 and 9:00pm he can be seen walking off to the Bedroom at which point he climbs up his sleeping cage and swings over to his roosting perch and is quickly off to the AmaZone for the night. Mornings are a little different as he waits for transportation service to bring him to the table perch for breakfast. Spoiled, Oh He is Really Big Time Spoiled! Or, maybe better stated, we are well trained! :D

Salty may be talented, but thankfully his talents dont run in that direction..... yet. I feel sorry for those parronts who didn't get a blue throat macaw, but have to deal with birds who think thats what they are!

Rocky basically is a free-range 'too except he's locked up overnight and until I get my eyes open in the morning (to quote my mom, who used that to mean, "Until I've had enough coffee to be coherent"). Other than that, he's free to range as much as he wants. We even leave him out when we go to work. So far, the house is still standing.

LOL! Rocky probably reasoned he could get your attention right away by making a loud noise!
