the wife had Sammy out yesterday and I was frying up some bacon
and here comes Sammy and lands on the counter next to where I'm putting the bacon on paper towels as it comes out the skillet. he has only done this one other time and that was when he seen me cutting some cheese. so needless to say bacon is now also a favorite treat to him. I gave him a little piece and I could not get rid of him till I put a little bit in his food dish and it was off to the cage for him. I tried to give him chicken bones and he looked at me like I was crazy but he sure likes the meat itself.

Chicken is supposed to be OK in small amounts, chicken bones are OK occasionally ( Salty loves his wing bones), but bacon? Hmmm, that's not even supposed to be that good for people. I guess a tiny schnibble is not going to hurt such a big bad cockatoo, I would really mean a tiny piece. Of course, Sammy is your bird and you provide him what foods you deem fit.

Dave, I am more worried that he is free flying while there is open frying going on. He could have just as easily landed in the skillet then on the countertop. With hot grease not only burning his feet but wings splashing it all over himself, your face, etc. Please consider caging your free flighted birds when your stove top is in use. No doubt its a PIA to do so, but from a safety standpoint it kinda makes sense, right? We don't want to read about a fricasseed Sammy !

Salty is not free flighted, but he can glide when he comes off his high ceiling perch and pretty far too. He goes back into his cage, or another room or downstairs when something is either boiling or frying or cooking on the stovetop. He would love to stick his little beaky into the food prep area, but is not going to happen.

Damn, now I want bacon for breakfast!

Yes I go with Wrench13 also, no way want to see a negative post about Sammy.

Now you are getting to know what he has taste for perhaps be prepared with something else on hand. "No you cannot have that, but here this is good" Bacon is a salty, processed meat and dead right not good for us, so definitely not good for Sammy. Wonder what it was that piqued his interest?
If Sammy not keen on bones just try giving tiny morsels of the chicken meat to him, he may progress to liking a bone eventually when he is not so suspicious?
Hope that bacon tasted goood?

yea he came out after I was started I stood right where he would have had to fly through me before he got to the range it is not a normal to be doing any cooking while there out. just my wife not thinking first before letting him out. as for the free flying I may have to bring an end to that as he tries going through doorways and I don't want him hurt.

Cockatoos seem to develop a map of their surroundings over time and then store that to memory. Mine takes himself off to different floors/rooms and is quite happy and confident. I have encouraged it by playing real estate agent with him and showing all the rooms in the house and then again if any changes are made to any of those rooms. Obviously it is essential that it is safe for them to 'go explore' and to know their surroundings.

I doubt it's good for them but my YNA likes bacon also. As stated above it's just enough for a taste and I try not to give him the white (fat) portion but the red meat part.
who doesn't like bacon (and cheese too).

None. My wife has one too many. Kidding!
Bacon is the gateway meat for vegetarians and parrots. Rickeybird loves it but doubt he gets it but once a year.

OK now I have to tell you folks about my sons favorite holiday. The Baconing. Started with just a few friends cooking up a few lb of bacon the weekend after Thanksgiving, to flush the taste of turkey out. It;s grown to the point where they rent a suite in a hotel that adjoins a party room. IN order to come you must bring at least 3 lb of bacon and be prepared to cook one dish where bacon is the primary ingredient. Bacon sushi, bacon icecream bacon coctailfranks, bacon vodka, bacon egg rolls... well you get the idea. Plus there is a bacon bowl which may NEVER be empty. I think last year they went through 60 lb of bacon. LOL, the next day they had a bacon hangover.

We're not worthy! The aroma must drive everyone in the hotel cray cray. Mongo IMPRESSED.
