Hi I'm from Oakley Ca. And have been a vet tech. For 8 yrs I'm disabled now and looking for a cockatoo. I was almost scammed from someone wanting western union right away. Got out of that situation. I'm looking for a cockatoo but not sure of species yet. Was considering a ducorps. Looking in the bay area, and Sacramento area any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums, thanks for joining!! The number of parrot scams is mind boggling, everything from give-away birds to the shipment of fertile eggs! You are wise to have healthy skepticism!

I assume as a vet tech you had exposure to a wide variety of parrot species? Cockatoos are my personal favorites but are not universally appropriate. If you have your heart set on one, by all means pursue the goal. Ducorps are beautiful but not overly common. A noble gesture is to adopt from a rescue, while acknowledging circumstances may not always be possible. I live in SoCal and am not familiar with NorCal breeders. You may search for local avian clubs, often a source of breeders and rescues.

Hello and welcome!! Cockatoos are one of my dream birds, the Moluccan is truly stunning to me, but cockatoos have very different behavior from other birds, in that they tend to be neurotic and demanding, but also have the potential to be loveable, affectionate members of the family.

I recommend searching here. It's a site for breeders specific to state so you can find breeders in your area. There's lots in Cali, but of course you want to make sure to meet the bird first before any payment is made. You could also look up bird shows/fairs in your area, where vendors/breeders will sell birds.

Thanks for your replys, and yes I am experienced with a wide variety of birds. The ducorps is one I've been wanting for awhile. But after more research and knowing the kind of birds I can handle with previous experience of owning. I've decided to adopt a baby meyers, at a local bird store that takes in unwanted birds and birds that can't be cared for properly. I jumped the gun jumping into wanting to get a too. But for the best decided on a Meyers which I have more experience handling. I've already chose names as well. The bird is being DNA sexed so Luna if a girl and Petri if a boy. Thanks for your responses. But doing my homework worked better in the end.

Kudos and much respect for doing research prior to purchase AND for adopting a rescue! Very cool choice of names!

You do know the hazards of MBS? (Multiple Bird Syndrome) :D:D
One day you may venture into cockatoo territory and acquire a Ducorps!

If you ever decide a Too is right for you and need a good breeder in Northern California, I know of an excellent one in the foothills.they breed rose breasted and bare eyeds, goffins and possibly a couple other too species. I was lucky enough to find that they are super close to me when I was searching for a bare eyed too. PM me if you ever think you need their info. Congrats on your Meyers! I was at Parrot Planet in Sacramento recently and a Meyers almost won my heart. Such a cute little bird.

Thanks everyone. And yes I have heard of multiple bird syndrome, lol. I have a cockatiel as well as a breeding pair of pineapple conures. I've been a bird lover since a young age. I am a dog person, but love birds personalities so much more. My Meyers is adjusting to his/her new home and has started spreading toys already, lol. He /she is very sweet and will mimic me bobbing my head. Ill pm you in case I decide to make the leap for a too. Goffins are my second choice of too. Thanks for all the replies and well as well wishes.
