Lily hates me

In 3 hours I have to take Lily to the vet for her injection, day 2 of 7 and she hates me. She won't come near me, these past two visits traumatized her so much I'm scared they might end up leaving permanent scars. I still have to take her in every day for the next 5 days and now I have to used a kennel because I lost her trust. Had this ever happened before? I'm scared she's going to hold a grudge for a very long time. It's so sad to see her like this

Nah, they can but she'll get over it. Now a African Grey, they can hold grudges. Even Salty holds a grudge once in awhile, after I go away ffor 2 weeks, especially if I didnt explain to him enough... More important is that Lily gets her medications.

Sounds crazy but i think if you gently explain to her it's for her health & talk every day and softly to her when all of the shots are over with just talk gently every day and leave her be I think will start coming to you again. Unless she is a budgie and then yes she will I hate everybody forever lol

How else would you take her to the vet? All birds should be put in a kennel or carrier when taken to the vet. It's safer for them this way.

She's an umbrella cockatoo, I will talk to her and sit next to her cage, I slept next to her cage last night because I was worried about her and wanted to show her I cared about her because I don't want her to see me as a threat or an enemy, these next 6 days around going to be hell

She usually just chills on a car perch, she enjoys the car, unfortunately she probably won't be after this week

I can confirm that Lilly does not hate you. It was obvious that she loves you the way she kept looking at you through her carrier while we were at the vet's office. You're doing great with her!

Fly free Plum, my gorgeous boy.
Plum has episodes of needing vet treatment about every 6 months at the moment.
I always ask to spend a few minutes with him before leaving especially if I have had to leave him there. We have chance to take a breath, check he is OK, share a cuddle, sing a song and he has been good every time we have to go, no fear. Vet thinks I am nuts but who cares. I always transport in a travel cage, (with bars/perch), gives good visibility and I think he enjoys the car journey as I get a running commentary LOL.

Shame this had to happen so soon, I am sure she doesnt hate you either. You could just do some little car rides that are not to the vets so she doesnt think all end up there. Remember if you are stressed it will be picked up so try and be calm and this will soon be over. Have you a treat to give her afterwards?

While it's true animals can hold "grudges" (not sure that's really what it is, more likely they just lose trust rather than actually hold a grudge) most of the time animals get over these rough periods with time and consistency. My advice would be to act this way - consistent. Don't be stressed when you are packing her in the crate or taking her to the vet. Talk to her the way you always do. Let her be be herself and keep her distance for now, she will almost certainly come around shortly after she feels better and you fall back to your normal routine. Once she is well, go back to offering treats, offering to play, whatever she likes, and most likely she will be back to herself before long.
Sometimes we all just need a little space to be who we are, and animals need that to.

Lily will get over any association with the vet rather quickly. Cockatoos really don't hold long grudges, and you will find ways to compensate.

Now if this was a Grey, as Al posted.....

She forgave me [emoji5] IMG_3412.jpg and Beatrice has volunteered to come to my house to help me with injections so there will be no more vet visits, for now. I can already see her energy levels increasing [emoji106][emoji3][emoji3][emoji3][emoji3][emoji3]

They do get mad. But they get over it. They're like toddlers with feathers.

What is the matter, that she needs shots?

Answering for emyoung: she has a minor infection and is getting antibiotic shots.

This is so awesome the two of you live close enough to be supportive of each other! I tend to be a loner, and I pay a price for that!

I am very fortunate to have found a bird lover like myself with such a kind hearted soul!! I literally couldn't have gone through this process without her
