So I actually had someone argue with me on the internet today about whether or not Lucille is a cockatoo, LOL. I explained that she is a rose breasted/galah cockatoo, a smaller type of cockatoo, and apparently this person was incapable of Googling, because I was then informed that this was not a "real cockatoo" and I should not say it is a cockatoo because cockatoos are white and big. They even sent me a nice image of one of the big 'toos. I found the whole situation rather amusing. Why does this person even care whether or not she is a cockatoo? It did make me wonder if any owners of RB2s or Goffins had ever experienced this strange phenomena. I always try to be nice to people being jerks on the net, but what I wanted to ask them is if I should be calling her a rose breasted cockatiel instead, then! :D

A cockatoo is a parrot that is any of the 21 species belonging to the bird family Cacatuidae, the only family in the superfamily Cacatuoidea. Along with the Psittacoidea (true parrots) and the Strigopoidea (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes (parrots).

You could say it is a Cacatuoidea

Cockatoos still have their own Superfamily :59: I was almost correct :54:

There was actually an obscure debate at one time about whether galahs and 'tiels should be classed separately from cockatoos, and that they were actually more closely related to each other than to other species of cockatoo. So I don't know if the person who was arguing with you took this little piece of trivia and ran with it, but so far as I know the debate never really went anywhere. Certainly not far enough for anyone to definitively declare that RB2's in general aren't actually cockatoos... much less to try and tell you about the classification of your own bird! Lol!

But I do know that as of this moment, the galah is solidly classified as a cockatoo. (Though given the fate of poor Pluto, who knows what the future may bring? Lol)

adjective: ornery

  1. bad-tempered or difficult to deal with.
    "an ornery old military man"

Really?

Lol that should also be part of the cockatoo definition!

I guess it would be giving that person too much credit to think maybe they were trying to say the galah isn't your typical too in some respects? Unsure how true that actually is but there are definite reasons I chose the galah over the larger "white" toos personally. Thinking of poor Rocky!

Oh, that is definitely why I have a galah! I could never handle one of the big toos. Sadly I can't give that person credit 'cause I referred to her as my "rose breasted cockatoo" in the post. Honestly I just found it funny that some random person cared this much about what I was calling a bird. I could have been calling it a macaw, and what would it matter? It was just a snuggle pic, for heaven's sake! Tis the way if the internet these days.

I've had people actually get angry with me for referring to a cockatoo as a parrot. I've asked, "then what IS he, if he's not a parrot?" "He's a cockatoo." Yes, and that's a parrot. A budgie is a parrot. A cockatiel is a parrot. A cockatoo is a parrot. My starling thinks she's a parrot and I go along with that, too. Sheesh.

I would tell them they are not really human, but rather an AI cyborg used to spread false information. Make them show you their birth certificate!

I actually had someone argue with me saying that Skittles was a red-factor sun conure and he is not. He just has more orange than yellow. I even contacted the breeder and his avian vet for confirmation yet the FB lady was not convinced. You'd think I'd know what breed Skitty is.

PS, I don't normally post outside the "Conure" thread, but I saw the words "RB" and thought someone was talking smack about the Rickeybird and me and Skitty would have none of that. ;)

LMAO, oh no, I wouldn't DARE speak ill of the great and mighty Rickeybird! I would fear for my life--or at least the life of any of the textiles in my home! ;)

I think more they thought that unbrella toos were the only ones!

To be honest I never heard of the galahs until a few months ago and didn't even know that tiels were related. The Cocka part flew right over my head

Now I know that more toos are different colours than the white ones! And some look genuinely like monsters (palm cockatoos)

I've heard Australians refer to flocks of mixed RBs and SCs as galahs and cockies, so I guess there's room for misunderstanding there.

It can sometimes get confusing where people apply names differently - for example in the UK we call buteo family birds buzzards, whereas in the US they're called hawks (which in the UK would only be applied to accipiter family birds), and the birds they call buzzards are actually vultures. Parakeet is another one - in Europe it's a generic term for a long tailed parrot that isn't a macaw, in the US it's used for what we would call a budgie, and Austrailians just use parrot for their long tailed species because the short tailed ones all have their own names.

By any measure though, a galah is a cockatoo!
