Is a playstand worth the money?

Thinking about a playstand for my Galah cockatoo, she currently spends time wandering about the floor or on her java wood perch attached to the outside of her cage or on the sofa with me, is it worth the money? Who else has playstand for their Galah cockatoo?

Playstands are great if you are moving between rooms and want your bird beside you. If I am in the kitchen preparing food (not cooking) I often have a bird with me, they love watching what I do. It can also be useful when I'm doing other stuff around the house.

I also find it useful when they are using the playstand whilst I clean their cage, that way I don't get pooped on lol. No so good for the 2 that fly back to the cage when they want, but Oliver has never learnt to fly so he has sit and play on the stand until I've finished his cage lol.

Honestly I can't imagine life without play stands.

Wanted to add two more ideas,
For a stable floor pole style use a disc harrow as a base, really sweet! Also a patio umbrella stand works.

Laylas favorite thing in the world is her tree stands! Just FYI....I got her Java tree for a good deal on wayfair.com and the manzanita came from manzanita habitats on eBay. Both are wonderful.

I'm strongly considering buying or making a pvc play stand for my boys for rainy days when they can't go outside. I can't let them out of the cage free range for safety reasons, but I can put a play gym in my spare room and keep the dogs out.

Very creative playstand, looks more like furniture than the typical units. Great choice! And yes, the background!!

I have a rolling type manazanite wood play stand! My son assembled it outside and rolled it inside to where my Cockatoo "Skye" was sitting! It scared her to death!! She wouldn't go near the thing for 2 weeks! But finally got used to it and tried it out!! Now she loves it!!

I have an apartment where the upstairs is a balcony overlooking the living room so a bird can easily fly to the bedroom. I hung a rope boing from the skylight up there and Rio loved going up and watching the birds outside! In fact he would get so excited he would start screeching. If you've heard a conure screech you know how bad they can be so I ended up having the blind closed when he was out

That is nice! If you want to 'rad' it up a notch, you can swap out some/all of the dowels with tree limbs! By the looks of it's design, should be an easy upgrade!

I lived in a tiny house and then moved into a tinier one. We didn't have the space for a typical playgym, so we made a hanging one from pvc pipe and wrapped it in vetwrap. Here's a rather busy picture of our old kitchen with the playgym hanging over the cages.

Since we've moved, the gym will be installed on our back deck (which has been enclosed to suit the birds). It will be reinforced and permanently bracketted to the wall with a few new enhancements, like a ferris wheel and hanging ropes.

What I'd suggest is to watch your bird and work out what sorts of things he likes to do. Then, design your playgym accordingly. The galah for whom our gym was made had large abdominal lipomas and wasn't very athletic as a result. All he could do was walk and climb, so I made him a gym that forced him to move around (albeit slowly) and exercise. We whittled 150gms off him just by making him walk and climb to find his food!

Now that my dear old friend has passed away (RIP mate) the gym will be used mainly by Rosetta the corella. She's what I'd call a violent player. She literally hurls herself round the place, flying and squawking and seizing hold of whatever she can grab to swing off it. Therefore, ropes and sturdy swings are her favourites. She'll climb on a cargo net, but only to get from here to there. Mostly, she likes to fly and when she's finished, she likes to sleep.

The Beaks will be the other occupants of the gym and their requirements are quite different. They like movable toys like beads on a wire or the sorts of button-pressing baby toys that make a noise. (Need to be *very* careful with removable parts!) The Beaks aren't interested in rope except for access to something they'd like to chew. Therefore, I'll have places where timber can be artfully inserted for them to chomp on.

(Aside: we had a PB huge storm the other night and a two-metre branch conveniently fell off our _Eucalyptus cladocalyx_ (tree) and landed end-on in the small skylight. Aside from causing a rather large and disturbing leak in the roof, it has provided a very nice piece of stringy chomping-timber for the birds).

I don't like most of the commercial playgyms you see for sale because they really only seem to be designed for a bird to sit on and occupy itself rather than exploring and having fun. A real playgym needs to be big and comprised of various intriguing toys and opportunities to move around. Just MHO...

I thought I would read through this, even though I only have a little Conure.
I spent out a fair bit on a playstand,3 months later she doesnt willingly use it,only to get a quick bit of food,and even then she will only stand on the dish. A waste of money.Shes too clingy to me to need a playstand,would rather have my shoulder and earrings to play with.
It seems to depend on the type of bird without a doubt!

Cagzo, your 'little conure' is lovely! I've only ever seen one: she lives in the foyer of the nursing home where my friend, Pat, is living and she bites like mad (the conure, not Pat). Have you tried teaching your bird to do little tricks? It's not hard and if she's as closely bonded to you as you say, she'd probably learn very quickly. There's something really moving about being able to ask a bird for a behaviour and then get it. Makes you feel they're listening to you, y'know? Anyway, I just wanted to compliment your pretty bird.

It's just an inexpensive clothes airer-lightweight, foldable and can be moved from room to room easily. Great for climbing, and he has plenty of chewable items hanging from it, and a washable carpet/mat underneath. No food or water bowls so he'll go back happily in his cage when required for sustenance.
