Kiki (a cockatiel)
Hello, I am new to this parrot forum community but I am in urgent need of some help understanding my bird's poo. So, I've had him for a year I got him when he was 8 months old. He's been very playful and seems like a normal bird! He loves eating next to me (I have a small plate for my bird, Kiki to eat his pellets and seeds out of), so I've come to the conclusion that he likes to eat with humans and thinks that everything WE eat is safe for him. and since he thinks that food that we eat is safe for him too, I left a bowl of watermelon instead of a bowl of seeds. He REALLY liked it so I continued to feed him bits of watermelon. He is a little slow eater so he eats a tiny crumb of watermelon but since he loves it so much, he takes 30 minutes. Today, he ate like 0.5cm x 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm cube. He ate it really well.

His poo has been fine the entire day until, BAM! He pooped out red stuff!
So I've been wondering if this looks like blood from the intestines or because of watermelon. I'm asking this bc I'm not sure if that little amount of watermelon can change the color of his poo. So, I'm a little scared because I searched it up and it said that it could be kidney disease but I remembered that he also ate watermelon so I'm kinda indecisive now. PLEASE HELP!

This is his first time pooping red stuff.

P.S. He is a cockatiel btw:yellow1::grey::white1::yellow1:

Yes, but, when I searched up pictures of "bloody poop bird" the images are strikingly similar...so I am still worried so I might visit a local vet just to be sure... but thank you!:(:yellow1:

When I feed Gus blueberries, his poop is purple. He doesn't eat anything green so I can't say what green foods do, but anything red comes out red. They push food through really quickly, so you'll see the color fade after a short time. It's very normal. If you don't give any red foods, and the red poo stops, then give some more watermelon and see if the red comes back, then you at least know what's normal.

I've had exactly this scare - phoned the very who asked a few questions about whether she seemed normal otherwise then said give it a few hours and see if they go back to normal. Sure enough, she was fine. It's scary though!

My birds take spells where they eat only one color of their pellets. Only red. Only green. Only orange. (NEVER yellow, LOL) Their poop is then whatever color they've been eating. The first time I saw red poop, my reaction was exactly like yours until I realized all the red pellets were gone. Eating watermelon (which is fine for him, really it is) could also explain the watery poop, because watermelon has so much liquid in it. So if he's otherwise behaving normally, it's the watermelon. Nothing to worry about. This is why it's a good idea to watch your bird's normal behavior, appearance and poop along with keeping track of what he's eating, so you know when something's off.

Wait until the first time your bird eats berries. Now that will make them poop a color that sends cold chills down the spine!
