Galah Cockatoo

Sponsored Links
Hi everyone, Iím looking to adopt/buy a Galah Cockatoo, I refuse to buy one from a parrot shop or breeder, I currently have five year old CAG that I got from this guy in NJ that looked like he was a parrot hoarder, he had 5 CAGís in his bedroom and never takes them out of the cage!
A month ago I got a sun conure from someone in NY that was defiantly just neglected and not taken care of, today both parrots are defiantly having a better life with me and my family, I feed them everything I can and the best food and a lot of time spent with both parrots, I got full blood tests done by Animal Genetics in FL and they are healthy birds
Bottom line is parrots need to be adopted or to buy from people that canít take of one anymore, so I will like to give a good home to a Galah Cockatoo adopt/buy from a privet person.
I did contact two bird shelters in NJ but I find them difficult to deal with.
Willing to drive to NJ, PA, NY, CT, MD

Re: Galah Cockatoo

I would wait. You only got your sun a month ago! You're fast turning into a hoarder yourself.

Slow right down and enjoy the 2 you have right now. Did you quarantine the sun? They're supposed to be away from other birds for a month in case they're ill.

what's so wrong with breeders? Yes there are some bad ones that pump out babies constantly but for every bad one there's loads of amazing breeders who do what they do out of love for animals and the joy of letting others have that love. The only reason people like this charge for a bird is to cover the cost they spend in raising the birds, they often take time off work to care for the baby as it is growing up

Yes I would agree with slow down and get to know your Sun well. Some RB2's are not good mixers, prefer to be only bird. Mine doesnt like birds that make a lot of noise ie Conures. You are better to stay with two and give them an amazing life than have three and it be mediocre because you are stretched. Have some time to just think for now?

BTW my RB2 is quite dusty so would the other two be ok with that?

Re: Galah Cockatoo

Having a houseful of rescued birds is a wonderful goal, but care must be taken to carefully integrate each species and provide the needed care. This includes having sufficient funding for vet bills or unusual expenses.

Some species are compatible, others merely kept a suitable distance, and a few will fight. During periods of hormonal activity, all bets are off!1

Quarantine is critical to prevent disease transmission from the most healthy appearing of birds. At best, you might accidentally allow a transfer that can be expensively cured by an avian vet, at worst some or all could perish.

I applaud your motives, please ensure you add slowly and know your limitations!

I think that such an animal that was created to fly should not be in captivity and thatís why I donít want to fuel the problem, that why I want to adopt or buy from someone that canít take care of a parrot any more, the ones that are already here with us in captivity we should do the best we can to give them a good life, and not to add more.

Iím not in a rush to get one, itís just that I know it will take a long time to find one that needs a good new home, and believe me Iím thinking about a lot, I might change my mind, $ is not the problem, I can buy one tomorrow from a breeder if I want, but if I will come across one that needs a good home I will probability take it.

The Sun is on the other side of the house, so he is not next to my CAG I’m waiting for results from Animal Genetics in FL.

Re: Galah Cockatoo

From experience of taking in rescues I try not to talk down about the homes my birds came from online; especially when looking for another to adopt. Reason is IF I was someone who had one for adoption (I don't) I would be a little put off by how you speak down about the previous homes.
It is easy to get overwhelmed and take on too many birds at once... many of us have done that so we speak from experience. I took on 3 fosters at once not counting my own birds and I was overwhelmed and regretting it in no time. For this reason I space out getting birds by a 1 year rule. Every time I adopt one I wait 1 year before I decide if I want to add a bird to the flock. This has saved me from being like so many people I know whose homes are just full of parrot cages... all wonderful rescues who needed a home but it consumes all their spare time cleaning cages and just trying to keep up.

okay sounds like you think you're going to save the world. You're not. There are professional rescues out there. The world of avian creatures would do a lot better if you were to donate or volunteer at one. you bad mouth all previous owners which I feel is wrong, how do you know what goes on behind their doors? What makes you better than them?

how long have you had the CAG? And how old is the sun? Have you experienced hormone time with either? The sun alone will deafen you.

To be honest you don't seem prepared for the work with a parrot considering you have jumped on to a random forum and effectively said "I want a galah, find one for me" and then when people have collectively said it's not a smart move yet you have disregarded what advice you have been given.

In short, it's not smart, there are better ways to help, stop acting so high and mighty.
