Jasper has been with us almost 7 months. While I do see changes he still doesn't trust or like us. He has progressed to chewing on things and playing with select toys. He goes immediately to his chop bowl if we drop something in. He is still very quiet but he now screams when he wants covered and uncovered at night and in the morning.

He no longer hides in the corner of his cage if he is scared, instead he hisses at us. I had put off getting a new cage because of how he hid in the corner but his new cage is on the way. He has gotten in the habit of taking his cage latch apart and escaping to the cage top. He waits until we leave and I just don't trust him not to do something to injure himself. Hopefully he will adjust to the new cage quickly. He still loves to throw his food out of the cage! He has shown interest in my conure when he is out. He will get as close as he can and just watch.

I really wish he would trust us and interact with us but knowing just part of his history I would say his attitude is justified. I haven't pushed him at all and I think his hissing has actually increased now that he knows I'll respect his limits. His new cage has a play top so that could be an interesting experience.

yay! progress is being had!

He clearly is starting to understand you mean food and is learning how to play. I'm sure with more time and more love he will learn not all of us humanoids are bad and you are to be loved. I can see some love hiding behind that wall he's had put up

I haven't come across Jasper yet. What happened to him if you don't mind saying?

When I got Jasper I was told he had been a breeder bird for 15 years lost his mate. He was then dropped off at a petting zoo where he spent 2 years in a cage with no interaction because he couldn't step up and would bite when the issue was forced. At his first vet visit we had his band removed and upon investigation found he was wild caught and brought into the US before 1993. So we really know very little about his life just that it wasn't good at best.

oh dear what a horrid series of events. So glad the act of catching in the wild has mostly stopped now. I don't understand the mind of that owner dropping off a bird caught in the wild then pumping out young for 15 years at a petting zoo. Definitely the first candidate to have a load of children grabbing at him. In no way could anyone ever see that going wrong.

It's good to see he's in a safe environment now and hopefully for the rest of his years he can come to forgive humans, considering that right there (not even knowing the conditions of that breeder although safe to say terrible conditions, His mate most likely died from over-laying) he has already made some huge strides in trust

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Despite Jasper's horrible history he seems 100% Goffins with his behaviors and shrill shriek!

A new cage with playtop could be a key to progress. My male wild-caught Goffins is probably around Jasper's age and has time out of his cage. He initially began to chew inappropriate areas but now shows interest in my single female Citron.

I'd be careful with him in the presence of your conure if uncaged. Goffins can be aggressive, though 3 of mine live in a room with a timneh and they just ignore.

Chances are high Jasper will love and acclimate to his new cage easily. I am amazed at how quickly they adapt, though given his history, perhaps a bit slower?

Also let's be fair those little conures if they decide they don't like another bird they'll take on anything including a hycanith macaw

I wouldn't trust either, both are too fast to intervene if they decided to go after each other. The conure, Ziggy is the only one of our birds who wants to take on everyone...through the bars of his cage!
