Handfeeding question

I recently bought a umbrella cockatoo a week ago from a petstore, however the day I went to pick him/her up they told me they wanted to keep him for another week or so. I was pretty upset considering they told me I could come pick him up in the first place. He was hatched in May, so my question is.. are they giving me a run around or does he really need that much longer to be handfed?

I've done some research about how it can take a long time to ween. At this point I can certainly do this, I've done it for a bare eyed cockatoo and had no problems handfeeding and weening him, but if the pet store does not allow me to do this, what am I to do?

:( i just want my cockatoo! I've gone into the petstore twice now and had them get him out for me and spend some time with him there, but I have things setup for him at home and I'm ready to have him home.

6 months seems an awfully long time for a bird of any kind to wean
even macaws only take 14-16 weeks ( or so I believe )
I would question them about it as it is very easy to keep handfeeding a baby who likes it even when they really don't need it anymore

If he really does still need it then hey what's one more week
ask if you can hand feed him in the shop so they can see you know what your doing it may help settle their minds and let you house him a little sooner
good luck

I agree with Pho's second paragraph. Each baby is an individual and some take a long time to wean. I think that it is better to have a petshop be more careful, rather then send an unweaned baby home. They really don't know you or your experience. Maybe if you go in and ask to handfeed him they will see your experience. Some Toos tend to really hang on to the handfeeding. It is better for baby to abundance wean himself then rush it and have behavioral problems develop.

I have asked to help handfeed him, but they won't even allow me to help. Its not fair or right for me to pay 2,500 for a bird that I can't even do anything with period. I'd be more than willing to come into the petstore how many every times a weeks, heck I do that now to play with him. One person tells me one things and someone else tells me something completly different. ARG =(

Good things come to those who wait
your doing the right thing by visiting him and all though just be patient
Perhaps the problem lies with whoever in the shop raised him not really wanting to let him go and so is drawing it out
perhaps ask to speak to that person and re assure them you will be in for visits etc
we all know how easily birds capture our heart and it's possible he has captured this persons hense the reluctancy

I did speak with the one guy i've talked to the entire time and he was so clueless as to why I hadn't gotten him yet. I told him what they told me and he gets this look on his face, like really?, and he kinda mumbles it because they lady who handfeeds them must not want to see him go yet and that was the only reason he had for me not getting the him.
