As well as being blind and almost featherless, Vanilla, our newly aged (40-50 YR old) Umbrella, is very quiet. Oh, but you should see her dance, it is beautiful, especially when she gets tapping:) But, my question now is, can we encourage any sort of loud expression from her at all, or is she too old, and too hurt? It was said that the previous owners would cuff her round the head every time she tried to voice herself, so now she is so quite, perhaps that is even why she is blind, I do not know. It is very sad. We talk with her, and make little noises with her, hold her all the time, but still nothing. We love her all the same, and the house is actually louder as the music is ALWAYS on for the Dancing Queen. I wish I could post pictures of her, but it keeps saying it doesn't work:( Thanks and have a beautiful week.:white1:

If you have windows movie maker it's super simple to make a video
post it to you tube and then copy and paste the link onto the forum

it's how I do it anyways :)

As for the noise issue I would say that a quite too is always good lol
but as for encouraging her to make noise just keep talking to her
play her videos from
you tube or such of toos or other birds making normal chirping , calling noises etc
hopefully it will encourage her to vocalize a little more
given the treatment she has recieved previously I would try and remain calm when she does make any sounds etc you want her to thing that it's ok and not that she is going to get hurt / punished for making noise
I would just totally ignore it. Eventually she will learn with a bit of luck that it's ok to make noise

She does sound pretty distrought mentally though by her past and may never be able to get past that
what she will know however is that she is loved , cared for and safe

I can't tell you how completely broken hearted I am for this sweet bird. I am so grateful for people like you that give these beautiful babies a second chance at real living and being happy. Thank you so much for taking her. I couldn't even imagine hitting a bird for ANY reason, but because she made noise? No offense to all of the awesome people on this forum, because it's my belief that a lot of us may feel the same way, BUT, it's reasons like this that I would prefer animals to humans.

Lets face it, some humans are just plain STUPID! Their ignorance just blows my mind and very often breaks my heart. My hubby is a Vet Tech, and a very good one at that, he see's cases of animal abuse way too often, It's just mind boggling that people can be so stinkin' cruel to such beautiful LIVING creatures, creatures that have no other choice but to have to endure the poor treatment their being given or have been given.
But, with people like you and so many others right here on this forum, You're making a difference, for every person that makes a difference in just 1 animals life, it's just 1 more animal that is allowed to live happily, the way it should be.

Do you have any videos of her yet? I would LOVE to see her dance! I am so glad you were able to take her in. Does she make quiet noises at least? I am sure she will open up eventually. At least you know she is happy when she dances.

Bless you for taking in Vanilla
Dancing already, that is a wonderful sign that she is happy
Keep talking and singing to her all the time, she must be used to your voices.
Remember her age as well, everything is suddenly so different now, she must adjust in her own time. Birds are so alike humans, a relationship must first be made, before that trust is given.
I love the daily updates, please continue keeping us posted
for sharing

Thank you for all of the love and support, I do have photos, and videos of her, I will try to upload them today. I just have to figure out how to make them small enough to fit :) Funny thing about all of our animals, dog, cat, parrot; all adopted, ALL LOVE EACH OTHER! I love how God does this. The dog tippy toes around her, licking her, and the cat shared her little cat bed with her for five minutes yesterday. I started you tube sounds of other parrots "talking", and making sounds yesterday. Thank you so much for that idea. Oh yes, and she ate a whole slice of melon too!!
