So I just rescued an umbrella cockatoo and need help figuring out his behavior...mainly pacing on his cage. He will do it for hours until I get him down to visit us but then he will jump off the couch, walk to his cage, climb it then start pacing again. Also he whines Everytime he gets to one end of the cage.

Hi and welcome! You have really taken on a full load! Think of your guy as a human that has developed survival skills just to keep from going completely crazy! Think of someone who is built to drive 100 mph and has been stuck at 15 mph for years!

thanks for taking this guy in, however you have taken on one of the hardest parrots to rehab. sounds like this one is mildly nerotic and it will take a lot of work to get him to open up. Make sure he has toys to b=chew and destroy, cocka toos love that. he should have a play stand/area with lots of things for him to do too. Read everything in our cockatoo subforum for inspiration and ideas. Good luck.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums, thanks for rescuing an Umbrella! Much work ahead, but the rewards are infinitely wonderful. We are here to help answer your questions and concerns!

Can you tell us a bit of your experience level with companion birds? Don't hesitate to state if this is your first; will help us calibrate advice.

Your Umbrella may have lived in many homes, the cage is the only source of refuge. You'll want him to feel comfortable away, but the process can be slow. Having a play-stand or portable perch is helpful to begin moving away from the cage. Most birds are food-motivated, having beloved treats such as nuts can stimulate attention. How long have you had him?

Building trust to achieve a close bond is crucial. Many techniques, check this: http://www.parrotforums.com/general-parrot-information/49144-tips-bonding-building-trust.html As he begins to trust and bonds, pacing and other repetitive behaviors will begin to mellow.
