Hello everyone!
I wanted to introduce you to Pita, a 15 yr old Goffin's cockatoo. I am her fourth owner. She was given to me by a friend whom the bird hated. She had actually drawn blood before which was why we were surprised she liked me. They decided to rehome her and offered her to me. I agreed as she already knows me and being rehomed a 4th time to someone she dosent know is a bit much. She has some mild plucking issues which will be adressed at her vet visit. Heres some pictures (Some of them might be upside down.)

Also her cage has been rearranged since the pictures were taken.

Welcome, Pita. Mine draw blood all the time. I figure that's just the price of living with parrots. LOL

Welcome to your new friend! 4 homes in 15 years is pretty rough

Hopefully she has found her forever home now

I don't think there is any dire need as her current cage isn't that small for her size, but when you can I'd suggest a cage about double the size of her current one, if not bigger. Goffins are small birds, but they are VERY active, much more so than other species their size. My dad's G2 has a cage about twice that size and uses every inch of it. Earplugs and a good first aid kit are also recommended with a goffin

I plan on getting her the biggest possible cage, but first I am saving up for a large playstand and a pack o bird. She lets me know when she wants something with a ear percing scream! Usually she just wants out or is displeased I left the room

Unfortunately, welcome to the world of crazy cockatoos, lol

As you settle in and find a routine, and most importantly learn to read 'too behavior, you'll find it happens much less. Willow still gets me every once in a while, but 99% of the time she's fine.

I don't think my freind really thought through cockatoo ownership as a whole including the "issues" such as screaming, bites and other issues like plucking.

My experience with a Goffin was...unfortunately..not the best

I have always had two fid's and when Smokey (TAG) passed away at 28 yrs young,Amy and I were devastated,grieving,and sooo sad..We needed another friend!
My then-girlfriends brother had two 'too's,Pookie a U2 and Jonesy,a Goffin.
He was looking to rehome Jones coz he and Pookie didn't get a long..this is how Amy and Beeb's "Uncle DJ" came into the picture.
Jonesy was about 28 at the time and DJ had him for about 25 yrs of that time.

I was really looking/wanting another Grey and not knowing what to expect from a 'too and My Bad for not reading up on them or asking questions on this awesome forum,went with my heart and not my brain lol.

It didn't take long for "The Cockatoo Man" (that's what he called himself lol)
to settle in,and he and Amy really hit it off well (Amy wants to be pals with everyone).
At first it was great! He started wearing clothes again,was starting to talk..was playing with toys..wanted and gave loveys..loved to be skritched and his antics/mannerisms were hilarious! Then...he started to SWEAR

"You're !@#$(*& me! You're !@#$%(*& me!"
The louder I talked...the louder he talked

Then...all of a sudden the biting started,for no reason. One instant he would take skritches,then turn and BITE!! HARD!!!and draw blood..then the non-stop from sun up to way past bed time the screaming!
I couldn't believe so much noise and volume could come from such a small creature!

Long story short...he got rehomed :15: BUT to a very loving and devoted family! Who he loves and they love him back! he is well adjusted ( I see members of this family a couple times a week and the just gush on what "BOB" ( his new name lol) is up to,and Bob is now bilingual,speaking English and Paakastani !

Good Luck with Pita..I know Scott will chime in..he is owned by five of those little beady-eye'd monst...ummmm...Fids!

Thanks for sharing! I have actually talked a bit with Scott and got some great advice! I was somewhat apprehensive about making this thread because of negative responses some people might have but I'm glad I did as everyone is very welcoming of Pita! Her first (or maybe second?) owners named her Pita which means Pain In The.....Butt.

Also her cage is where it is so she can watch cartoons when I am at school.

'Toos are not for the faint of heart, especially in spring. And they're so long-lived besides that most of them go through a lot of homes in their lifetimes. Rocky, our U2, can be absolutely insufferable and we freely admit that, but on the other hand, he can also be so sweet and funny. This spring he was particularly insufferable and even went through a phase of attacking me, and I'm his favorite. They should probably never have been brought into the "pet" category at all, but they were and now somebody has to look after them.

I agree. If not for Pita I doubt I ever would have owned a cockatoo.

Sorry about picture quality and how messy my room is. Most of the parrot stuff is up there so it's a tad cluttered. Also her sleeping cage is up here so she can be near me when we go to sleep because she screams otherwise.

I'm so glad you created this thread! It can be your journal to share Pita's progress. She seems to be settling in nicely, though you'll know more in about 2 weeks or so. Birds often "choose" their parronts, seems there is a definite connection with you!

I had to bring her out this morning to watch cartoons because she was screaming at me. I had originally planned to let her settle in by leaving her alone for a little while but I think she has other plans

Do be careful with "rewarding" the scream. That is her way of demanding attention, and if successful, will become a problem. Toos love to be with their people, but important to teach independence.

She is a beauty, and obviously recognized you as someone who would treat her with the proper deference, like calling her "the Queen!" We all know this can be a difficult adjustment, but sounds good so far, and we are wishing you all the best!

Thanks so much! The screaming seems to be subsiding as she realizes it doesnt get her anything. Before she came to me she was on a diet of cheap seed mixes with peanuts in them. Peanuts and Sunflower seeds were pulled out and I kept the Sunflower seeds for treats, peanuts were thrown away. She is somewhat okay with the Zupreem friutblend pellets and will eat chop if I mix some seeds in.

All of my toos loved Zupreem Fruitblend. I eventually weaned them off to Harrison's Course. Took about 2 weeks and they all love the new food.

Some of the "universal" fresh foods loved by most of mine include yam, sweet potato, garbonzo beans, banana, pear, edamame in the pod, plain cooked oatmeal, melon seeds, peas, and 199% whole grain cooked spiral noodles. It can take a long time for them to try and love a new food. My "Peanut" avoided pear for literally 25 years!
