Oh yes ;)

I like the way the owner is not afraid to show the amount of work and damage to the property this wonderful bird comes with.
It's not al roses and sunshine, sometimes it manure and rainy days, unlike a lot of other parrotbloggers.

Yeah, his apartment is a mess. But this guy really loves that bird and obviously is willing to give up normal accommodations for the bird’s happiness.

They're the coolest birds.

At one time I had four large breed dogs, a Newfoundland, golden retriever, pit bull and basset hound. My pit bull is the only one I have left, the others died of old age. That was years of commitment, cleaning and work.

I think I could take on a cockatoo, just don't want to no matter how cool they are. I'd rather live vicariously through the videos.

Hey Sandy, years ago I bred and showed Norfolk Terriers in the Virginia countryside. At one point I had 11 Norfolks, a Labrador, a Poodle and an Italian Grehound. Still have the poodle and IG. Birdie is more work than all of them, much less a Moluccan. The videos are both hilarious and touching....enough for me too.

As a cockatoo owner, it is just amazing how much 1 pet can take over your life (for better and for worse). I venture to say more than a child even because with children, the care they need is more obvious to the general populous, plus, they have friends that they can go play with and they go to school and eventually mature. I LOVE my bird, but I can't believe that anyone can walk into a store and buy one without having to pass some sort of crazy test!

My "well-adjusted" cockatoo is like a very demanding and gifted toddler with Autism who cannot really be punished (at least not like a kid),who constantly wants to be nearby while simultaneously fearing 75% of enrichment producing things within the environment (including harnesses/toys). Kind of like a moody + OCD Sheldon Cooper without self-control or volume control. My comparison to a toddler is flawed though, because most toddlers don't have a special diet and respiratory sensitivities that could kill them in 5 minutes, and even the worst toddlers definitely don't strike fear into others the way my bird does due to their lack of beaks (very few people have the nerve to babysit my "Too" because apparently, the majority of my friends/family are sort of scared of birds...at least close up--and she isn't a mean bird as birds go). Plus, a toddler can go outside in any temperature and a toddler can't fly off..and they definitely don't NEED 12-14 hours of sleep every single night, nor are they prone to self-mutilation! OHHH and when a kid is sick, they don't hide it on purpose until they are near-death lol. I think kids might actually be easier.

Oh yes! They really are super amazing/beautiful!

I just can't get over the fact that every day, I am excited to put mine to bed.
Then MOST mornings, I am excited to wake her up. It's quite a paradox lol.

LOL-Mine does the exact same thing to me with MY OWN SUNGLASSES- 1st, she pulls them off of my head like a darn ninja.
Then she does some weird weight-lifting moves with them until she finally starts smacking me with them, only to frighten herself when one of the longer pieces snags on me (or the cage) or snaps back towards her face lol. She then tosses them (in a dramatic "rage") off of the cage lol.

I have subscribed to Dan's channel for years...and to clarify he and Max live in a house in PA!

Jim

You beat me to it! Dan and Max live in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area, and Dan owns his home. It's a 2-story home, but he doesn't show a whole lot of it, just what involves Max, and the messy rooms are Max's playroom and Max's bedroom, lol...Dan is an extremely private person and is also extremely protective of Max, and the reason he doesn't talk much about where he lives or his personal life, or he won't even give a PO Box so that people can write to him is because he's afraid that someone will figure out where his house is and want to steal or harm Max. And I certainly cannot blame him one little bit!

Dan is a great human being, and he is the best example that I could ever give anyone of how to care for a bird, especially a Cockatoo. As we all know, raising and caring for any parrot is not easy, but a Moluccan Cockatoo is literally like having a perpetual 5 year-old child for 80+ years. And Dan didn't ever want to have a bird at all, let alone a Moluccan Cockatoo. Dan did one of the most selfless things ever in what he did for Max, and as Dan will tell you, he has not taken a vacation since he took Max in 10+ years ago...Max has his own bedroom as well as an entire "playroom", and what Dan has done that 99% of Cockatoo owners don't do is provide Max constant mental stimulation. He buys him new toys, books, etc. and gives him new thing to play with every single day. Max has a toybox, lol. He has things to do in every room of the house. He has multiple cages and stands all over the house. Dan cooks 3 meals a day for Max, and he comes home from work for lunch every single day so that he can get Max another hour out-of-cage-time and a good lunch every day. He reads books to Max. Dan takes better care of Max and provides Max with more mental stimulation, attention, and love than a lot of people provide to their human kids.

I don't now if you guys know the story of how Dan originally ended-up with Max, but it's a story of complete selflessness on Dan's part, and complete selfishness on the part of a friend of his. Dan had 2 cats I think, and at the time lived in a different house that was by a lake, and he had no want for a bird at all. A good friend of Dan's who obviously had very little knowledge of birds and how to care for them, let alone a Moluccan Cockatoo, found Max for sale on Craigslist in Maine. Max was 4 years old at the time he was being sold, as his original owner who got Max as a baby was an older man and he had died suddenly, so his family was selling him. So this friend of Dan's drove to Maine and bought Max, and brought him home...However, this friend of Dan's was leaving to go down south somewhere for a construction job I think, and he was leaving 2 weeks after he brought Max home, and was supposed to be gone for a month I think...So he asked Dan if he would watch and care for Max for the month he was gone...Dan said yes, and in preparation Dan did hoards or research online, watched videos, etc., did everything he could to learn about caring for a young, 4 year-old Moluccan Cockatoo (his friend did no such thing before actually buying Max)...So Dan moved Max into his house with his cage and his friend went down south (I think one of the Carolina's)...

Well, what was supposed to be a month-long construction job turned into a 6 month construction job. So Dan kept caring for Max for the full 6 months, paying for everything that Max needed, buying him all kinds of toys (I don't think he had any at all, just a cage), taking him to the CAV, etc. Of course Max and Dan bonded over this 6 months, after all, Dan's friend hadn't even had Mad for 2 weeks before he left him with Dan, so Max didn't even know this guy, nor did he have any bond or attachment to this guy...But Max fell in love with Dan, and vice-versa, obviously. After 6 months gone, Dan's friend came back home to PA and immediately told Dan that he wanted Max back, and he came to Dan's house and took him back home, along with everything that Dan had gotten for Max...Just like that, this guy thought that everything would be fine, Max was "his bird", and that was that...

Immediately upon leaving Dan's house and going home with the friend, Max started screaming and screaming and screaming and screaming. All day long, all night long, every single day. Dan ended up having to go over to the friend's house every single day just to calm Max down, spend time with him, play with him, cuddle him, etc. so that Max would stop screaming...But ultimately Max would just start screaming and flailing himself all around his cage as soon as Dan left...I don't know how long this went on, but not long after this guy took Max back home with him, he decided that he was selling Max to get his money back because Max was just a bad bird, lol...

Now think about this for a second. This guy didn't know Max at all, he only had him less than 2 weeks and then left him with his friend for 6 months, allowed the friend to care for Max every single day, all day long, buy him everything he needed, etc., and it was quite obvious to this guy that Max wanted nothing else but to be with Dan, as this guy had to call Dan to come over to his house every single day for hours to spend time with Max, because Dan was the only thing that would comfort Max and calm him down, and get him to stop constantly and continually screaming. Yet, when this guy quickly decided that he couldn't handle Max and his screaming and biting (of course he couldn't handle Max, and I don't think Max was ever out of his cage again unless Dan was at this guy's house), he decided to post ads online, on Craigslist, etc., to sell him so he could get his money back...He didn't think "Hey, maybe Max should go live with Dan", even though Dan knew and told him that if he sold Max to another person that Max was just going to end-up plucking, self-mutilating, and being sold over and over and over again from home to home to home, until he either ended up dead or permanently in a rescue because no one would be able to or want to handle him. But Dan's friend didn't care. So, Dan ended-up paying this friend money and giving him a bunch of his personal possessions in-exchange for Max. ****When Dan brought Max and his cage back to his home, Max's cage (a huge, thick-barred Cockatoo Cage mind you) had dents in the bars all over it from this guy throwing things at it and slamming it with things because Max wouldn't stop screaming...i can't imagine what Max went through during that time period after he left Dan and had to go back to that guy's house, but thank God he wasn't there for long. I don't know what you would have to throw or bang on the bars with to actually dent and cave-in the bars, but poor Max...That was in 2007.

So that's the story of Max and Dan. I wish that there were more people like Dan in this world...
