i have a cockatiel named 瓜子GUAZI(chinese for sunflower seed),recently want to rescue a cockatoo
I'm new in this Forum, just registered today.

we recently moved to a new office. there is a coffee shop nearby. They own a cockatoo named Blue. Blue is 4 years old and he/she was dumped by his/her owner for about a year. now he has feather picking issue for about 8 month. I want to rescue blue.

I first saw him at Jun 21st. he was standing on the perch with chains on his feet. Lost two fingers on the right foot. He has serious feather picking issue. There are only sunflower seeds and dirty water in his containers. I'll post the photos in my album.

After I talked to the shop manager, i know that blue has been moved here by his owner one year before. the lady is his second owner. After she found him so loud and behaviour badly and then she decided to move him to the coffee shop. the manager and employees don't know how to treat a cockatoo. just give him basic needs to keep him alive.

Me myself have a cockatiel and i love parrot so much. i can't see him like this. and i truly want to rescue blue. but after i talked to the manager, he said that the lady doesn't want to sell Blue. I'm so frustrated, but to tell the manager how important it is to care a feather picking parrot. the food, the nutrition and love are all important. and I've bought ROUDYBUSH MAINTENANCE Ingredients and mix nuts Berry Bowls for blue.

give him vegetables and fruits normally.

made some toys and petting him daily.

Now blue is getting better and better. i saw him growing little feathers.
the owner has been out of the town for a long time. and she will be back this week. I'm trying to talk to the owner myself this weekend. Everyday I told him” blue I’m not giving up on you. You neither!” hopefully I can take blue home. and give him a forever home.:white1::white1::white1:

Even as it stands, this is a win/win/win for all parties! Blue’s life has greatly improved. You are slowly building a great bond. Shop has you every day for coffee, also their mascot is looking much better! Bless you!!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Thank you for joining the forums and showing an interest in this beautiful bird! You have already made a huge difference in Blue's life! I can understand your desire to adopt and save him from a life on display.

The leg chain is especially troubling, can lead to injury or worse. I understand that may be to prevent theft or flying away. If theft is *not* the main reason, perhaps having Blue's wings clipped will allow for outdoor living.

Looks like a Bare-Eyed Cockatoo...and he looks much, much better than he did...Thank you so much for doing what you're doing for this bird...

I don't know if there are any "animal abuse/neglect" laws in China, but this would definitely qualify in the US as a severe animal-neglect case, and the bird would likely be taken from the owner, especially if the owner left the bird like that for a year. Something you might want to look into if you speak to the owner and they refuse to re-home him to you...I'd try to impress upon the owner that she doesn't even see the bird, not for a year and hardly at all when she's home, and that Cockatoo's have the intelligence of a 4-5 year-old human toddler, and without constant mental stimulation and direct attention and interaction, they become bored, neurotic, and psychologically damaged, which results in them self-mutilating. She needs to know that her bird is literally harming himself because of the way he is neglected and treated, and the next step would be him chewing holes through his skin, or worse...Try to impress upon her that Cockatoos need hours and hours of direct attention every single day, just like a human child...and that sunflower seeds are literally killing him, as they are not a "diet" for any parrot. He needs pellets, a healthy, low-fat, and varied seed-mix, and then fresh veggies and fruit. Not sunflower seeds, they will kill him very young due to Fatty Liver Disease and just simple malnutrition...

Keep us posted on how it goes...Good luck!!!

****Just an FYI, I noticed that you're feeding Blue red-onions...Do not feed any bird any types of onions at all, they can be very toxic to birds. (no Avocados either, onions and Avocados are the two no-no's for birds).

Blue is a blue [eyed] cockatoo. They look kind of like a cross between an umbrella and a sulphur crested 'too, but with blue eyes, hence the name! ;) And probably how Blue got his name!

If the dates on your images are correct, alsonlupin, that's an amazing transformation in less than 2 months time! Way to go! I don't know what all is in that salad, but I would recommend avoiding tomatoes and red kidney beans. Everything else from what I can see appears fine! Although I don't feed cabbage to my birds, I haven't heard of any issues with feeding it.

If Blue's owner isn't willing to give Blue up, then I hope that they will at least listen to you and be willing to take better care of Blue through your guidance!

Hi Monica,

I’m curious, why no kidney beans, tomatoes or cabbage?
I’m not aware of any issues with these foods. Please enlighten me.
Thanks.

Kidney beans uncooked can make a parrot sick which I read here and I believe tomato can lead to illness (especially the stem)

Cabbage I too am interested by

Thank you LordTriggs.
I’m aware of uncooked beans in general. I’m also aware of the tomatoes stems, but not the whole fruit itself. I usually give Levi cannellini beans as they are high in calcium.
But, I know nothing of any dangers w/ cabbage. Cabbage is a very healthy food for ppl and I eat it often. I also add it to Levi’s chop from time to time.

I didn't say no to cabbage! ;) I just said I don't feed it. I do see red cabbage in the photo, though! :)

Red kidney beans have the highest amount of toxic lectins. There are other beans that could be fed instead that have lower amounts of lectins in them, in fact, adzuki, mung, garbonzo/chickpeas, lentils and sprouting peas are all safe to be fed even in sprouted form! Now, you still want there to be about 1/4" or longer tails but they are safe to feed uncooked. All others should be fed with caution. (aka don't under-cook and don't sprout!)

I could be mistaken, but it doesn't seem like cannellini beans are high in calcium...

Mung beans, raw 27% calcium
Chickpeas 21% calcium
Adzuki bean, raw 13% calcium

In comparison to cannnellini, which I was seeing 1% to 8%. Now, I'll admit, that information could be wrong, just what I was seeing when looking at nutritional facts for those beans in particular.

As far as tomatoes go? Same basic reason you wouldn't feed lemons and limes as a regular part of the diet. If they had a taste every now and then, I doubt it would harm them, but it's not something you'd want to be an every day occurrence.

Thanks Monica. That’s interesting every time I did a search or looked up foods high in calcium cannellini beans were the beans that always came up.
Hmmm .... 🤔

You are amazing. Blue's lucky you found him. I'm sending you all the most fervent wishes for a positive outcome with the owner. Charm the heck out of that owner, she will see your sincerity through words and the actions you've displayed thus far. I think at the end of all this, you will be successful in bringing Blue home.

Rooting for you and Blue.
