i have a cockatiel named 瓜子GUAZI(chinese for sunflower seed),recently want to rescue a cockatoo
hi guys,

I've talked to the owner last sunday.

she have been out the town for a long time, and she is very happy to see blue is so much better now. she thanked me for helping blue. she seems nice, but since blue is getting better, she is very hesitating to sell blue. she said she will consider about that and she will come to the coffee shop this Tuesday and we can talk about that. however, today is tuesday and she is not here, so.......

there is a lady working in the coffee shop, she loves blue. after i told her how to treat a feather picking too, she tries to release blue everyday and petting blue whenever she is free. i was thinking if the owner can't sell blue to me, but the lady in coffee shop can treat blue well, that will be good for blue as well. but today the lady told me that she is thinking of leaving this coffee shop, cause the shop manager is so mean to her in the past one year. and her friend recommend her to another shop. i can't imagine that. the manager is really mean and don't really care about blue at all. but what else i can do. i'm so frustrated...

one question, are toos better in a big cage or on the perch? i have a 600x900x1970mm cage in my home. if the owner doesn't want to sell blue to me, will a cage better for him? sometimes when i came to the office early in the morning, i saw him screaming inside, with his claws teased by the chain. he looked at me screaming loud, hoping me to release him. i feel so sad but have no way to open the door. if a cage is better for him, i can try to talk to the manager and take my cage to the coffee shop.

he is real "dusty", is that normal? or because he is growing feathers? someone told me to bath him, but he is afraid of water. what can i do for him?

yes- this I do know: cockatoos are VERY dusty...always!
It's the way they keep their feathers in shape.

yes, always have a cage even if it's just for when they sleep or you leave the home. Any bird can chew wires and walls both of which can kill them so better to stay in a cage. Though when you can supervise them the cage should be open. I know it's common in china but chaining a parrot's leg is insanely dangerous, their legs aren't strong and if they spook and try to take off they will almost certainly break their leg.

It sounds like getting blue out of there will be difficult. I feel the owner is less attached to Blue and more attached to the money they spent on Blue (and quite possibly the customers he attracts)

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
At least you are establishing a relationship with Blue and her owner. Perhaps she will change her mind over time.

Bathing helps minimize cockatoo dust and keeps their feathers looking well. Unfortunately many parrots hate water, so there is a method you can try. Find a spray bottle with adjustable nozzle, and fill with water. Make sure the bottle has never been used for anything dangerous! Adjust the nozzle for a fine mist, and slowly approach Blue. Aim the bottle nozzle upwards at an angle, so the water mist falls to Blue from above. This method feels like natural rain. Begin with short bursts of water, and stop before he becomes upset.

Cockatoo dust is just a normal part of living with them. It's actually a concern if they *AREN'T* producing dust! That said, bathes can certainly help! Here's some bathing techniques - although these may be difficult to try since you don't have Blue.

  • Try luke-warm water
  • Try cold water
  • Try ice-cold water
  • Try a spray bottle
  • Try a plant mister
  • Try in the sink with the water running or just some water in the bottom
  • Try in the sink with the sprayer
  • Try in the tub with some water in the bottom
  • Try a casserole dish or similar with some water
  • Try the dish with ice
  • Try the dish with foot toys
  • Try the dish with some leafy greens like endive or other types of lettuces that may create a "natural" bowl
  • Try the dish with a vacuum cleaner
  • Try in the shower with you - watching you having a blast getting wet!
  • Try dancing the bird into the shower with the water already going
  • Try spritzing yourself, and have fun doing it! Then spritz the bird
  • Try outside in an empty cage large enough to spread wings during a nice rain shower
  • Try outside in an empty cage using the hose with a mist/shower attachment
