WOW what a weekend.. We picked up Angel Friday and after 10 hours in her pet taxi she was more than ready to get out and stretch her wings..
We decided it would be best to put Angel in our bedroom for the time being so as to keep our yorkie away from her..
Saturday we had to go to Ocala to meet our new Granddaughter.. So that left Angel and Krissy (my yorkie) home alone.. We felt both would be safest keeping them apart..
Sunday we decided that keeping Angel hid from Krissy was going to make her more curious and maybe more aggressive so we moved Angel to the living room. At first Krissy was barking and growling and jumping at her.. After a bit Krissy settled down.. Now I still will not allow Angel out of her cage while Krissy is out just for the safety of both of them.. But Angel seems happier being where she can be with us and see us..
Boy was she happy last night.. She danced and sang for a long time.. She loves hip hop music which makes my 13 year old daughter happy.
Angel insists on sitting on my husbands shoulder.. After all he has read he is a bit concerned about her sitting there... He is not at all scared of her he is just afraid since she loves to pick scabs and dry skin she may clamp down or if she got scared..
So that brings me to a couple of questions for all of you more experienced bird handlers..
First how do you keep her from running up on your shoulder? He bends his arm when she wants to run up his arm but even then she still is very fast to get on his shoulder and if she gets scared at all right up the shoulder she goes..
Another question. If she is on the cage and we need her off we ask her to step up and sometimes she refuses.. How can we get her off the cage?
Once again thank you for taking the time to read and help answer our questions..

About your first question. If you can picture a bird on your hand and wanting to get to the shoulder, put the other hand at your elbow as a block and lower the arm a bit. It may or may not work. Your second question about getting Angel off the cage could be handled if you have another perch for her to get on while your are holding it. She should get on the perch, especially if you have a treat in your hand. Love you updates and photos. Happy holiday too (no pun intended).

Fred was that way when I first got him. He got to the shoulder no matter what I did! Continue to try to block her, and when she's more comfortable, she'll stay on the forearm...or at least that's what happened with Fred. Fred also refused to come off the cage top. I used a stick perch, to elminate the possibility of a bite, and he usually complied.

We fostered a U2 this past summer and he was an amatuer "dermatologist" too. He remove 3-4 moles in the 2 months he was with us.

SB and Sharon both gave good advice about shoulder perching and getting her off her cage. She just needs to learn what's acceptable at her new home. She's smart so it'll happen.
