Will my cooking fumes be harmful to my Mollucan?

We have an open-concept kitchen, and because I want our mango to be able to see us everywhere in the house when I cook on the range top, do I have to be worried about anything in particular?

Depends on what you cook with. Anything with teflon is out.

No non stick pans pots ect. I use only stainless steel and cast iron. No self cleaning on oven. Cleaning supplies in general are terrifying, find the safe list.

Our friend has had an amazon for 43 years, he said he never heard of the teflon rule! I heard about THAT when we fostered a Sulphur crested! Ugh - Yes i have cast iron and stainless steel - Thank You

Check cookie trays, cake-pans, popcorn poppers, rice cookers etc for Teflon/PTFE/PTFOA as well- don't leave coffee pot on after it brews.
If you fry foods or cook foods with a strong smell...or if there is any smoking/burning of foods- those all could be bad. Then there are the other risks of a bird flying into something like boiling water, a flame etc.

I have rescued animals almost my entire life, and I realize they are all DIFFERENT with totally different needs - You all are so kind and helpful - Mango is so much love and fun, we have 5 little chihuahua/Chiweenie/Terrier rescues, and Mango LOVES entertaining them, but They NEVER get the chance to get near her as we have a very tall metal doggie exercise pan all around her cage and when I leave the house for an hour or so, she goes in her cage, and the doggies go into their room so it's all good, so it is all good. When I was a little girl my dream was to live in Africa and rescue animals, my favorite show was a show called Daktari, and those of you who are 60 or older will know what I'm talking about, I have always loved every animal on the planet and my husband and I will do whatever we can to help those in need. Anyway, thank you all again I really love your help you are all angels on Earth.

ANY fumes, no matter how harmless to mammals, can kill birds. Remember the canary-in-the-coal-mine "tradition"? I'm so glad you're reaching out.

Thank you Gail, you just made the most important point in this thread...ANY Fumes, whatever they are, can cause your bird anything from discomfort to extreme pain to illness to death. Their respiratory system is extremely complicated and sensitive, especially the air sacs, so any type of fume/gas/vapor can be harmful.

Teflon contains toxins that are released into the air as fumes when the Teflon is heated-up to a certain temperature, and that temperature seems to change depending on who you talk to, anywhere from 200 degrees to 400 degrees F. But what everyone can agree on is that if your bird is exposed to any of these toxic fumes from Teflon or any other "coating" that contains PFOA's or PTFE's, your bird will die almost instantly, and there is nothing you can do to save them. So ANY cookware needs to be checked to see if it contains any Teflon (usually the black colored non-stick surfaces are the Teflon ones; any type of ceramic non-stick cookware that contains no Teflon is fine)..Pots, pans, bakeware such as cookie sheets, cake pans, muffin tins, etc., any self-cleaning oven mode cannot be used, space heaters, air conditioners, hair blow-dryers, pretty much ANY appliance that "emits air", hot or cold, or any appliance that heats itself up, such as microwaves, rice cookers, etc. GEORGE FOREMAN GRILLS ARE BAD!

So your friend who has had the Amazon for 40 years probably hasn't had any issues because his pots/pans haven't heated-up to the appropriate temperature to release the fumes (if he has used anything Teflon in the past 40 years); a lot of the time in cases where birds have died, it's because someone has left a pot/pan on the stove and forgotten about it

Cleaners, candles, incense, Glade Plug-In's and similar scent products, perfume, cologne, etc. All of this needs to be avoided around your bird.
