was not good.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your thoughts and prayers! I've seen their power work so many times for other birds, I just had to ask it for Dommie in his time of need. We had a call early this morning to say he didn't make it through the night.

I just feel *so* resentful that this brave, feisty old bird had to die in a strange place and in pain. After beating all the odds to survive neglect and abuse, you'd think he'd have had a better innings, wouldn't you? But it wasn't to be and the empty cage is just breaking my heart.

Many of you won't know, but Dommie didn't like me. For some reason, he only liked men and so would smoosh himself up under my husband's beard, take a beakful of hair and fall asleep on Old Dozo's chest. Or, he'd snuggle himself right into my son's shoulder, take a beakful of his ear and - well - fall asleep.

If I walked by, he'd raise his hat and open his beak menacingly. He would grudgingly allow me to offer him food and occasionally took it without biting. If my daughter walked by, he would size her up from a distance and then launch himself at her, presumably with a desire to shred her into small pieces! If he flew, he would always land on her back and dive right into her (very long, flame red) hair. We assume it was the hair he was most offended by, but we'll never know. I can promise you Ellie never harmed Dommie in any way and loved him as much as we all did. The funniest thing you've ever seen is a galah gallumphing across a tabletop in pursuit of a frightened young girl. Oh Dommie, I miss you!

I guess the reason I'm posting this is to say that even though Dom was a damaged personality owing to having been neglected; even though he had a leetle tendency to bite the hand that fed him (ie. mine); even though he was cranky and irritable and feisty - he was GORGEOUS!

He positively basked in the warmth of our love and knew perfectly well that he was the heart of our home. He would fly to his fridge and look down upon us and I swear to you he'd be grinning, thinking 'what'll I do next?' He was the most wonderful personality and he fit perfectly with our family's off-beat sense of humour.

So if you ever get the chance to offer a home to a neglected or abused bird, DO IT! You won't be sorry! You'll be rewarded in their progress, in their returning health, in their rehabilitation, but most of all you'll be rewarded by their love.

Our Dominic wasn't a handsome boy by any means. He was bald front and back from self-mutilation and he had three big lipomas that hung down from his breast and vent. HOWEVER - he had a certain look in his eye that said 'don't mess with me' and another that said 'I am at home'.

Oh Dommie! You were a Good Bird! Rest in peace, old mate. XX

I am so sorry...That is so hard.
You are a good person for caring about Dominic- regardless of his interest in you, and he was a good bird for being himself always and persisting through all of his troubles (I wish more people in the world thought like you). Obviously, Dominic left a beautifully feisty and lasting impression, and I am so sorry that you are going through this. I wish there was a way to make death a smaller part of life.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences, Trish, for your loss of Dom. He had character and spirit in abundance and will be sorely missed. Dom's story is an inspiration for those hesitant to adopt a bird with history.

This is heartbreaking news indeed but Dom fought the good fight for a long time. There’s a special place in heaven for spirits like his, and indeed like yours. As a grieving birdie mum myself I feel your pain. God bless you for loving Dom and doing all you did to care for him.

I’m so so sorry for your loss. He sure was an amazing and gorgeous boy.
Thank you for sharing his story with us. Truly touched my heart. ❤️
I’ve recently rescued an IRN as well from a neglectful house. They brought him on impulse and when he didn’t meet up to their expectations, kept him very poorly. He stayed in a small carrier sort of cage EXACTLY his size(so you can imagine, no place to move around) and is very afraid of humans now. He’s not the most pretty boy, but he has my heart. He doesn’t like being around us yet, is very moody but I’m hopeful. Wouldn’t give him up for the world.

The loss regardless of whether one is a favored or not is just a deeply felt. And, even more when their passing is not in our hands, with us there. The small, but important savings is that Dommie knew and felt Love prior to passing and likely now has joined the small gathering ready to comfort us in our moments of sadness and to guild us on their wings when it is our turn.

Deep Warm Feather Hugs, Good Friend.

Dearest, you saw him out in style. He passed while loved and treasured, and that is a gift that lasts into Eternity. This was a beautiful rescue and a perfect example of love in action. Thank you for sharing Dom with us.

Trish, I am so very sorry for your loss. I know all too well the pain of losing a beloved flock member, and I wish there were something I could do to take away the anguish of your grief.

But even in your grief, try to focus more on the blessing that was his life than the tragedy of his passing. Know that, in rescuing him from his prior situation, you gave Dom a gift precious beyond price. You introduced him to unconditional love. To joy. To family. To a sense of home. Yes, his life was shorter than it might have been, but the love he received in the care of you and your family made it a life worth living.

Dominic flies free, now. Effortlessly. Unburdened by lipomas and untethered from the limitations of his body. Beyond pain. Beyond frailty. And buoyed on the warmth of the love that you and your family gave him throughout his life.

God bless. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, my dear friend.

Sorry Trish..I have no words of comfort except I am so sorry for Dom :31:

Dominic is flying free across Rainbow Bridge now, with my Smokey and so many others that were taken away from us way too soon!!!
Rejoice in the time that "we" had with them, and remember the sheer joy and unconditional love they gave in their way too short of time they were with us.

R.I.P. Dominic.

I'm so sorry for your loss. He sounds like a wonderful bird and so blessed to have landed in a soft place with your family, who loved him in spite of his challenging ways. I hope you find some comfort in the thought that you gave him love and security and he knew he was loved.
