i have a cockatiel named 瓜子GUAZI(chinese for sunflower seed),recently want to rescue a cockatoo
hi guys, i finally got blue home with me! yeah!

the lady said i treat Blue "too good" which makes her the bad guy. She felt uncomfortable for my behavior and one day, she took blue home with her. after 2 weeks, she called me whether i can take blue home for a while. then the coffee shop manager told me that since Blue go home with the lady, blue screamed too much and made a lot of sounds everyday. she can't stand for blue's nonstop screaming and she can barely sleep in the night. she has many cats and dogs and turtles in her house. Blue yelled at 3 in the morning everyday, which makes the dogs bark as well. her neighbours complained about the noise issue to the police and she can't keep blue in her house recently. so she asked me whether i can keep blue for a while. maybe even longer. yes, sure! of course! I'm so happy!

i prepare vegs and fruits and eggs everyday for blue. eggs are his favourite. he has many toys in the cage. i open the cage and he can go around and play when i get home after work. I don't know how long i can keep him in my house, but seems he is happy now. he still screams, but not so much. in the morning and afternoon for a while. he is very sensitive and insecure, and after i come home, i have to be in his sight. if he can't see me, he will scream. please help me and tell me how to deal with that. :white1:

love y'all

I’m so happy for you and blue. Cockatoo owners will speak up but i am sure that Blue will settle. Cockatoos are like all parrots and need to make their noise so some of the noise won’t go away I expect. All the best!!!

So happy to hear blue is with you. I have 2 rescue cockatoos in our flock and from what it sounds like, poor blue wasn't getting the love and attention a cockatoo desperately needs. They cant spend (or any bird for that matter) the majority of their time in a house/cage. Our flock spends 98%+ of their lives outside of their houses living freely amongst us. Cockatoos are loud (especially our moluccan), but what you described from that lady...thats not normal. Poor angel sounded deeply deprived [emoji852] i hope in the end Sweet Blue gets to stay with You[emoji847][emoji178][emoji106]

it's good to hear Blue is with you now. I was hoping the lady would see sense and it sounds more like she heard sense coming from Blue!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
That is an awesome development! You and Blue have a bond, but it will be tested now that he is in your home.

Many cockatoos require more attention than their parronts can give. For now, Blue is in a new environment and will be testing your patience. It is important to give plenty of time and love, but equally critical to teach self entertainment. A cage filled with toys and other ways of stimulation are helpful. Some birds enjoy music or watching television. Too close a bond will turn Blue into a neurotic screamer, wanting you in his sight every waking moment.

VERY glad to hear a positive update on this bird. Congratulations on your beautiful new friend! Blue looks so sweet and like he needs so much love.

Cockatoos are indeed much more attention-needy than most parrots and are undoubtedly a noisy bunch. It will be extremely important you teach Blue independent play and self rewarding behavior (i.e. foraging). Cockatoos are very destructive and intelligent, so he will require a constant rotation of toys to rip up and ones that make him think. Foraging is basically toys where the bird must solve some kind of puzzle to retrieve a treat. It teaches them there is a reward in entertaining themselves, making them less dependent on you (though cockatoos will still need hours a day of your attention). Can be as simple as wrapping some nuts in tissue paper and stuffing them in an empty TP tube or there are acrylic complex puzzles with levers and twisty things the bird must figure out to get the treat. Also remember, Blue apparently spent much of his time outside seeing tons of people every day. It's got to be a little sad for him to move into a quiet home environment as a creature that thrives on social interaction and who views humans as who he socializes with. I would strongly suggest you get Blue harness trained ASAP to ensure he can continue coming out as often as possible and interacting with as many people as possible. By interacting I mean being in exciting public places and receiving attention from people but don't let strangers hold him. All it takes is one little nip from a bird that size to a stranger and you have a massive issue. Frequent outings makes a lot of parrots overall happier, more well adjusted birds and less vocal/agitated at home. All parrots, but especially cockatoos, are highly social animals and highly mobile animals by nature.

Oh and perhaps invest in a good pair of noise cancelling headphones, thats a essential item for all cockatoo owners:D
