We were evacuated and are driving to a hotel. Bianca has become hysterical and is barking like a dog inside the carrier.

What should I do when we get to the room? Can anyone help me?

Cairo the Ekkie!
Just try to stay calm and keep as close to her schedule as possible.

If you cover her cage at night, then cover her cage. If she's used to certain foods at certain times, then try to keep to that. If she's used to certain activities, then do those if possible. She's probably reading that everyone is stressed, so she (as well as everyone) needs reassurance that it'll be ok.

Hopefully they'll let you into the room, but I wouldn't even risk it. I might have someone call ahead to the motel/hotel to see if they have pet-friendly rooms, but I wouldn't ask the front desk in person. I'd just see if I could sneak her in. (Do not take my advice.)

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
Let her out of the carrier and try to cuddle/snuggle with her and re-assure her everything will be ok???

Thank you all. We are in the room. I left her put for a bit and now put her back inside. I’ll cover her so she can try to sleep. I’m stressed out my mind

Assume you are evacuated due to fires in SoCal? If so, hope your home will remain safe.

Bianca will definitely observe your emotions and behave accordingly. Calmness is a virtue, though not easily faked.

Good luck, keep us updated!!

Yes those fires. She’s being a champion but we still have to get through the night and she hates that carrier.
She’s such a doll. All silent I was able to sneak her in here no problem. Now I pray she falls asleep.

Oef, I heard about the fires and was keeping my fingers crossed-- but they really got that bad eh?!

Just hang in there and if there is a lot of excitement...try to make it fun-exitement and not the panicky kind.

Its like that film "Life is Beautifull" - even the crapiest situations can be made a bit lighter with a successfull lie.

I wouldn't let her out in the car if she hates the carrier. She could easily spook after a sudden stop etc.

That having been said, I wish you luck and hopefully she adjusts. Try to keep things as close to usual as possible.

Maybe try taking her on more trips in the future (even short ones) in order to ease her carrier fears.

Oh I'm sorry, I hope your home is okay, that must be such a worry.

I hope you don't have to stay in the hotel long, but I'm glad you were able to get Bianca inside okay without being detected! I have done that MANY TIMES without any issue. What I do whenever I have to take the fids and I can't find a hotel that allows them to stay is to find a hotel that has the doors to the rooms on the outside, so you just drive around to where your room is a park right in front of the door....That way they don't have to actually go inside a hotel, because that is asking to get caught. Then the "Do not disturb" sign goes right on the doorknob, and I make sure to tell them to not change the sheets or anything...I just cover their carriers with a blanket and right in we go...They are usually so out of sorts inside the hotel room that they don't make much noise either...Works like a charm every time!!! Last time I did that was actually in Raleigh right after I picked-up a little 13 week-old green and orange ball of fluff named Kane, I got there late and couldn't make it back to my friend's house to stay the night, so I found a fantastic Motel 6 that was set-up that way (what's that called, a "motor inn" or "motor lodge" when the hotel rooms are on the outside?)...That hotel was absolutely fantastic, the rooms must have just been redone because it was beautiful...And no issues...

Hope everything goes well with you, your fids, and your home. Hopefully you can go back home soon!!!

We got through the night. She slept around nine hours and then had breakfast with as usual. She enjoyed herself for about two hours and then became nervous so I put her back in the carrier. Now she goes from trying to tear it apart to taking catnaps. I hope she won’t hate me for this. We had made such nice progress until now!

I was actually in the process of picking out a nice carrier and had plans to take her on short trips but this was so sudden that I had to put her in what I had handy. I’m going to drive to the nearest pet store to get her something more appropriate

Update on the situation. We were allowed back home and found it in good shape, thankfully. Bianca has been a champion. When I opened the carrier to let her back in her cage, she took one step and them went back inside! I guess she enjoyed the adventure after all :)

What a relief to know you have returned!! Keep vigilant as those fires have a way of reversing direction and causing havoc. Cannot wait until the Santa Ana season is over.
