Yesterday I got a desperate message. This very nice woman was in over her head. An umbrella cockatoo had been dumped on her and she was in way over her head. She tried. She really did try her best and she loves him, but she had to admit she couldn’t do it. I am not in a position to take in another permanent resident, especially not a U2, but I saw the pictures. This bird is in pretty bad shape. His beak is overgrown and he cannot comfortably close his beak. He is basically a Skelton with feathers. He’s got some other issues as well. I couldn’t say no. But I had to make it clear that I was only a temporary emergency home. I would take him and get him vet care and get him healthy, but then I would need to find a forever home. She agreed to that. So today I drove 240 miles round trip to get him. I had to make a second quarantine area because the room I usually use for the purpose is in use as a nursery, but thankfully I have a large house and MrC is basically a saint and didn’t mind helping me convert the first floor (house is a tri level split and the bird room and nursery are on the second floor, with family bedrooms on the third). We have a lot of work to do, but we will get him all sorted out in time.

So, without further ado, meet Sydney.

I love him, he’s gorgeous and you’re a star. Let us know how it goes. Are you two getting along well so far?

He’s terrified, but he’s a sweetie. He’s not a biter, just quietly refusing to give up
That death grip on the bars of the travel cage. It took some serious bribery to get him into a regular cage to sleep.

He really is very sweet. That picture was taken as he was listening to my resident cockatoo singing the song of his people. He got soooooo excited to hear another one of his species. I can’t wait to introduce them after quarantine is over.

And my friends have a betting pool going on for how long he will be here before I declare myself his forever home. We shall see. I really don’t think I have the ability to do right by him long term. I’m going back to school in January, so that’s going to make a major impact on my available time.

That’s funny that he’s excited to meet your other cockatoo :) I always wondered what Bianca’s reaction would be upon running into another bird that looks just like her. Maybe I’ll look for U2 playdates near our new location.

They haven’t met yet but they’ve heard each other. Sydney will stay separated until his infectious disease tests and other blood work all come back showing he’s okay to introduce to the rest of the flock.

I hope he turns out to be healthy. He looks undernourished for sure but that’s easier to fix.

Oh Beatrice, bless you! That poor, poor bird! I would take him in a heartbeat, only I can't afford even an economy berth across the Specific Ocean. I hope you keep him! At least he's easy, unlike my naughty girl who is sex-crazed and hyperactive. I think Sydney is a noble name for a cockatoo (although we don't have U2s in Oz). LOL! You could get five more and call them Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart.

Joking. ;)

Another amazing rescue, you'll work your magic and rehabilitate Sydney! About that betting pool, odds are good he's in his forever home *if* he turns out to be a relatively low maintenance cockatoo. They exist, ask me how I know lol.

Frankie already has opinions on the matter. At this point the only way I can see me keeping him forever is if Dr J says he needs end of life care. I don’t think so, but given his condition and unknown age (maybe 25, but who knows), it’s a possibility.

He’s not in terrible shape considering everything. He’s a little underweight which is obvious just looking at him, but not enough to get super worried. He does have a minor jaw deformity which is probably why he struggles to eat. Vet recommended pasta with veggie purées for now and see what I can do with soft veggies. He got his beak and nails trimmed and looks far more comfortable now. CBC should be back this evening and the rest of the labs within a week.

He's definitely too skinny but other than that, he doesn't look too bad. My U2 never closes his beak all the way; it's just what they do. Sydney's looks fine in the photo.

It’s nit that he doesn’t, it’s that he can’t. And the vet confirmed structural deformity in his jaw, which stinks, but at least I know what I’m up against and can work with it.
