Rocky has this habit of making a sound like somebody has punched him when I correct a behavior. Last night, for example, he tried to chomp me in a sensitive place, and I pushed his beak away with ONE FINGER. He made that sound. Imagine a human being punched in the stomach, in a cockatoo voice. "OOOOOOOF." I did NOT hurt you! Good grief.

A couple of weeks ago, he wouldn't move his foot so I could close his cage. Had the claw wrapped around the door frame. I tapped on his foot and tried to make him let go, again ONE FINGER.

"OOOOOOOOOF!"

He invariably does this when Hubby is out of the room, so Hubby either comes or calls, "What happened to Rocky?"

Nothing. Nothing happened to Rocky. He's being a big baby and trying to make me feel guilty when I haven't even DONE anything to him, yet he bruises me and makes me bleed and I'm supposed to not even complain a little about that.

Is this just a Rocky thing, or is it a cockatoo thing?

Oh who's a smart birdie!
My Neptune looks me right in the eye and says " be a good birdie,!" Then as he reaches to bite me he says "good boy!" I say bad boy! Then he says " ah-oh.... Are you ok? "
Arrrgh why'd I teach him to talk!!!
Infact anytime he is about to do something bad he says " GOOD Boy! " And sometimes even laughs!!! Bad boy has never passed his beak , even though he hears that all the time.

I live your over acting Too!!! Pretty funny!!

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
Mine makes this noise when attention is low---it's adorable...It only happens when she is calm enough to think clearly without screaming about her woes and it is so funny and confusing..It's kind of like a grunt mixed with a low dog bark and it tends to make people walk into the room to figure out what is happening.

Mine has a different "pain" scream that she will sometimes do when unharmed (if she is worried she will be).

Her most typical "mindful" attention seeking tricks are: saying "HiiiIIIIIIII!" repeatedly, or pecking at an imaginary object while puffing her wings out slightly lol.

When she is doing her typical (LESS MINDFUL/IMPULSIVE) stuff, its "COME HeEEEEERRRREEEE" (followed by a noise like a squeaky toy) or (when losing patience) "BACK BACK BACK BACK!!! BAD BIRD!!"

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
That's rather manipulative, er, cockatoo behavior! None of mine do that, so perhaps more species related or learned behavior.

We have a spare bedroom that I use as a dressing room/music practice room. He goes in there with me DAILY. One of my percussion instruments is sitting on a dresser in there. He's also seen it repeatedly. Over the weekend, he decided he's afraid of it and last night I picked it up to show him the sound it makes (he loves music). He freaked, flew off my arm (he only flies at all when he's scared) and landed on the floor. I put the thing out of sight, picked him up, and he burrowed into my chest, whimpering like a frightened child. What a BABY.

Totally relatable--- mine does that too and after she flies (from fear) if she can't find me, she will RUN (not fly) to her cage, even if it is like 3 rooms away lol!

I told one of my co-workers about the percussion toy incident and she said Rocky sounds like a child. YES. That's my POINT. He's unreasonable, he can't talk plain, he isn't potty-trained, and he whines a lot.

Very rarely! About the worst they'll do is chew something naughty or engage in a scream-fest.

Mine just literally said, "baby squirrel, come here... come here baby, come here" (while looking directly at a squirrel). SO CUTE...
Right after that I got "back back back back BAD BIRD COME HERE!!!"

It's freaky when they says things like that!!! Amazing though!!!! Too smart too!!!!

Neptune is my only bird that uses words in context,. He is always fascinated when I'm cooking. He says what are you doing every time. That's not that impressive. Lol I always tell him I'm cooking. Tonight though while I was cooking he said " What are you cooking?" Caught me off guard lol

Rocky says "hello." He says other things that are too garbled for us to understand. But boy, can he say "hello." LOL

Yeah-- Mine does a lot of ranting/rambling too and it's totally unintelligible, but she does pretty well with the things she knows how to say---squirrel was a first and she said it "surl" but I was like...DANG....because I said, "Do you see the squirrel? and she said, "Baby surl, come here!"
She always uses "come here" when she wants something that is out of reach (even objects) lol.

I love a good cockatoo rant...they are so hilariously garbled and passionate!

I think Rocky believes we are hopelessly stupid because he will look me right in the eye and rant for several minutes and clearly I don't understand any of it. Here and there something sounds like something so I repeat what I think it was and he sighs. You can see he's thinking, "NO. NO. That is NOT what I said at all!" He can say "I love you" and "How are you?" and "I'm all right" and his name and a few other things but I'm the only one who understands any of those. It's funny when we're sitting on the porch and a neighbor walks by and he'll holler "Hello!"
