Prolapsed vent

So, we have been taking Kaya to an Avian Specialist at the University of Wisconsin for 2 years with great success. Our last visit we had a new vet because ours moved out of state.
I am an ER nurse so I'm naturally attracted to nasty things. When we were on our way home I took a look at her butt. This time the metal sutures looked different. They were further apart and not very tight.
Well, tonight she felt extra slimy down there so I gave her bath. She is prolapsed again, right around the sutures. I shoved it back in, just as instructed in the past, but I am so frustrated. Frustrated for her. Do I take her back to the vet? Do we just live with it, like we were before her first surgery? She has cardiac arrhythmias every time she has anesthesia now.
My anxiety is through the roof for her!!!°°

I am concerned---I mean, my inclination is to say, yes, take her to the vet. Then again, you know her best. Can someone do a home visit?

Are you guys making sure that nothing you do triggers her hormonally? I know that it can be hard when they get into a cycle, but just in case, I am mentioning this because any shadowy spaces, cuddles or petting other than the head and neck can trigger a U2...same with warm/mushy foods, wrapping them in blankets etc etc..I know how they can be---just mentioning this in case it is possible that you guys hadn't considered these factors (if you have, forgive me).

I am still inclined to say take her to the vet and then consider an implant for hormones (assuming everything else has been done) as this could kill her.

Thank you for your concern! This has me so upset! We did 3 rounds of hormone implants and they said after this, they aren’t as effective, so they didn’t repeat it. We have been pretty good about not touching her body and she is on a pellet diet mostly. We’ve dealt with this for a few years so we’ve gotten very familiar with eliminating stimulation. When we adopted her at age 13, the vet said she had very little tone. We assume the prior owner wasn’t as informed because he taught her how to lift a wing and say “wanna scratch”. I’m calling them tomorrow!

I'd call the vet, seems the suture technique was less effective than in the past. Assuming they'll want to repeat the procedure, but cardiac arrhythmias are concerning.

When you suggest "live with it," does that imply the surgery will be effective if not ideal when healed?

As an ER Nurse, you know the discharge document regarding 'call if anything is out of the normal, ect...' So, yes, call the Avian Professional.

FYI: It is not uncommon that an all Pellet diet can provide too much of a good thing and therefore become problematic in cases like this. We have found this to be true with our Amazons and now use Pellets as a supplement.

My poor baby is just a booty nightmare! We adopted her with a prolapsed vent and have dealt with metal sutures and hormone implants, but now I think she’s trying to lay an egg. I don’t know what to do for her.....

You both have suffered with this. You are such a good person to have gotten her and tried to help.
But if you even think an egg is trying to pass she had to go to the vet right away! Everything that has been done to that area may make it impossible for her to lay the egg. Which would become a life threatening event.

If she is trying to lay an egg, get her to the vet...even if she isn't that looks very swollen...can you send them pictures???

Thanks. This is killing me. I called the av who is 2 hrs away. She’s not passed any stool since this afternoon and she’s not acting right. AV said she will need surgery. I’ll keep you posted.

I don't know what else to convey but good luck with your trusted AV. A difficult choice, balancing potential egg binding with surgery and potential for cardiac arrhythmia. Sending feathered hugs, please keep us updated as able.

Oh my goodness, how awful! Please let us know how she makes out at the Vet!

***Update***
I get to bring her home today at 4:30. Anesthesia went well this time with no cardiac arrhythmia, which is better than she’s done before. Once they removed her metal cloacal sutures she was able to pass the egg in part due to the sedation and relaxation of her muscles. They are putting a new deslorelin hormone implant in her and we will need to keep up with this every 6 months for a while. Something new since we got her... we are not putting the cloacal sutures back in. The vet thinks her tone has strengthened and we are going to try going without.
This am is lab work and rest and then for the 2 hr ride home. That’s her favorite; she loves car rides with mommy.
Trusting your vet is important. It’s pretty much been $2,000 every time we visit, but my baby’s worth it!

So happy to read your baby is doing better. time was of the essence and you were right there. I would rather go "without" then having my fids go without.
