Is This Normal For a Cockatoo

I don't know much about cockatoos and am seeking information about whether this is normal for one. There's a family on another forum having some unusual things going on in their home, and one of those things is the cockatoo waking them in the middle of the night squawking loudly and intensely as if someone were trying to grab it. They say it is not the normal sounds he usually makes at more reasonable hours. What say you that own cockatoos?

He might be having night frights. Some birds do. Like nightmares for humans. Tell them to leave a corner of the cage cover up and a night light on so when he wakes up he can see out and will not be as scared. I've had a cockatiel and a starling with night frights and it will likely pass after a while.

Parrots have really bad night vision, so yeah leaving the cover partially off and providing a soft wattage night light will likely help.

Salty usually tucks in at 10PM and has only had a fright once that we know of. We cut a small square out of his cage cover so some light leaks in for him.

DYH Amazon
Check for shadows that move across his sleeping area. It is not uncommon that headlights from a passing automobile to cause a movement of light across the room. And, there is also the possibility that something has been moved in the home and its shadow may now be on his sleeping area or another light has been turned-on.

Note: Some Parrots, Children an a few Adults need reassurance that others are around during the night. Our DYH Amazon will provide a very slight call-out at night if he believes someone is up or stirring. When that individual 'contact calls' back in a like tone, he may do it a couple more times and with a like contact call back he will be fast asleep again. It is important to remembers that Parrots are not know as deep sleepers and commonly choose to be on watch during the night between sleep periods.

Cockatoo's rarely do anything in a hushed tone, so it is likely his checking if everyone is okay.

FYI: Ask your friends to join!

Same here , if disturb them I get a contact call which for me at night, I say it's still night night timeback to them.

I got my Pikachu , and was told he had night frights. When he had one at my house I cha ged his cage. I out some stuff to block one corner, that's were he sleeps now , feeling safe and hidden. No more night frights.

It could be night fright and usually a night light in the room and cage slightly uncovered helps with that.

I don't know. I may post what the poster of that thread thinks may be going on and see what you think. It's from a forum called Unexplained Mysteries, and the guy thinks it could be a spirit. He said the noise his cockatoo made one night was way different from the usual.

Here is his original post:

Hello all, I'm usually a skeptic when it comes to this kind of stuff, but now I'm lost for words and trying to figure out different ways this could have happened to make in true to me, but the other night (TUE) my sister got home from work around 11:30PM-12PM she got my niece (she just turned 2 last week and her name is deleena) from my moms room got them some cookies and milk and then went downstairs into her room and shut the door,IT WAS ONLY THEM IN THE ROOM, while they were trying to get settled my niece was being funny and my sister started to record her for snapchat usually like all women they rewatch the videos before they post them, while they was a particular one she played again over and over which ill share you you all, but in the video my niece begins to tell her mom there is a CUCOY (mexican term we use for monster basically) and my neice tells her mom to shh shh shh and my sister laughed because she thought it was funny as she was laughing something or someone wishper my nieces name. Keep in mind that everyone in the house was asleep it was midnight myself and my parents all had to work younger sister has school in the am. And my sister would joke about something like this specially with the look my niece had in her face and on the video the voice is clear as day and it knew her name is this thing after her? . She called my parents downstairs and they started praying and what not and nobody talked about it the next night (WED), Well just last night is the reason I'm coming here for answers, We have a white goffin cockatoo his name is elvis, hes only able to say one word which is "bouncy bounce" and then some days he'll just be talking some gibber jabber that doesn't make any sense it's pretty funny we keep his cage right outside my sisters room across the living room, well last night around 12-2AM I heard something and opened my eyes still in bed elvis was screaming and yelling like something had a hold of him since we've had him I've never ever heard him make those noises before it was very disturbing, I wish I would have got up to record it, I'm not going to lie i was pretty scared. And i don't know if birds can sense spirits or ghosts but why would he be acting like that at 2am..
.
This link below should be a video of the guy's niece named Deleena. He thinks he heard someone whisper her name. Do you? Near the end of the video the girl turns as if someone said something.

I sent this guy your ideas abut it possibly being night fright, so perhaps the family will fix the cage accordingly.

I 5000% heard it in the video, but I wonder if it is fake. Either way, 50000000000% sure a male voice says Deeanna---heard it with volume at normal level on first try lol.

Our house was seriously haunted when I was a kid--a new home too. Call me crazy if you want, but honestly, my mom ended up calling a priest after numerous DIY attempts over the years. The straw that broke the camels back was when my dad was out of town and her bed slumped down next to her as the door to the room closed---We all had crazy stuff happen there. The priest solved it and I am not religious really, but there is weird stuff out there. Sometimes a lot of anxiety in a home seems to manifest itself with weird activity. My name was whispered during our whole issue...My mom's voice was also mimicked when she wasn't around..I don't even like typing this as it 1. makes me look insane and 2. creeps me the heck out.

My ears aren't good because I don't hear it, however the poster said he showed the video to several others and they heard it. He said his parents had the house blessed and he hasn't heard more noises. However, watching tv alone he thought he saw something out of the corner of his eye but not sure. I wonder then if this is for real perhaps something did scare the cockatoo.

I dunno..creepy though. The voice could be fake (a person doing it) but it is clear as day on my end.

SYBIL is a good too name... if you get the reference....

I would have to say your correct in that statement "Cockatoo" and "normal" is a complete contradiction to each other. I doubt I get anyone that disagree with that? Reason why I don't recommend one to any one that sane.

Well you are not insane because many people have it happen to them too, it is real. By the way, I told the guy on that forum, and didn't give names - just said a person on the bird forum, about hearing the name on the video and he was glad someone else heard it too.

There are some interesting stories on that forum, and it's not only about the paranormal but other stuff too, called Unexplained Mysteries.

Just because you don't think the cockatoo can say anything but "bouncy bounce" does not mean he really can't. This morning, my husband called something to me while I was in the shower and I didn't catch it and said "What?" and Rocky echoed, "WHAT?" as clear as a bell. The bird might also be the one who said the child's name. I assure you, the bird had a night fright. Some of them can be quite violent and terrifying for bird and humans alike. My cockatiel Johnny used to have them quite often and he would shriek like someone was murdering him and sometimes it took quite a while to calm him down.
