We were told that BabyBird is female. However on some of the facebook groups I belong to it has been repeatedly stated by several people that female cockatoos have brownish eyes and that solid black eyes indicates a male.

Any thoughts on this?

The only way to be 100% sure is DNA testing. This what you wrote is a general rule but not always effective

Why DNA, See this Thread: When your "boy" lays an egg.....

I believe the coloration is true for many but not all cockatoos! Two of my three female toos follow the legend. Sailboat linked my third example, thought to be a male until she laid the first egg at age 24!

I can recommend getting DNA testing done online thrugh IQ Bird Testing. It's about $12 and you just need a couple feathers from near the vent or a couple small drops of blood from a nail clip. I just used them this fall to get DNA tests for my babies I bred. Fast results and easy to complete.

Wow-first time I've seen this service-this is great!

Rocky's eyes are all black and he's a boy (after much detective work and some lucky breaks, we found the person who got him from the breeder), but I agree that isn't absolute, just a guideline. If yours is the only 'too in your house, it shouldn't make that much difference unless you want to be sure to watch for signs of egg-binding. Even single females lay eggs sometimes.

I am 71, married and fairly private. I have PM privileges but prefer the phone. Printed messages, are so limited. jh
However ... ! On Youtube.com via the search window, using Parrot; I have seen mention of using a magnetized needle or nail on a string above a birds head. NOT fool proof but another indicator. jh
