I heard parrots like to eat Hibiscus flowers, so I looked it up to make sure they are safe for the bird, as my Hibiscus is blooming now. Everything I read says they are safe, but I also read that Rose of Sharon (a type of Hibiscus) is toxic. How do I know if the Hibiscus growing in my yard is safe? I live in Michigan and the Hibiscus plant dies back every fall. In the spring I cut the stalks back to the ground. The stalks are very light brown (almost white) and hollow in the spring when I cut them. The plant does not start growing again until June, after everything else is already growing. Does anyone know if these flowers would be safe for my bird?
Also, would the woody stalks be safe for him to chew on after I cut them in the spring? I bet he would love ripping them apart.
Thanks, Dan
