Ms. Lucy Lou (and Gracie too!)

It's been a week since I've had the "Twins" and they've started to settle down. I decided to play with Lucy a little and see what she'd let me get away with. I already knew she steps up nicely on a wooden perch, so I took her off her cage with one and she walked up to my hand.

Then I put her on the scale. She's about 500 grams

Anyways, she lets me scratch her head a little. We just hung out and I talked to her, and gave her a wood-block to chew, she likes those.

Gracie photoshoot is next, but I don't know if she's ready to play. They both go to the vet this week too. Fun fun fun all around.

I have been hoping for updates on the ladies. That wt. is what she weighed when taken to Fallston to see Dr. Zantop. That is good she maintained her wt. Big girl she is. It is a good thing you are doing to expose her to her new world. She will blossom under your care.

Okay, Gracie weighed in at 412grams. Had to use a wooden dowel perch with her as well, she stepped right up onto that. I gave her a cashew while she was on it, let her settle down and then put her back on her cage after a few minutes.

Roxy, I've heard "good girl, hello" telephones ringing, all kinds of whistling (mostly from Gracie) Lucy likes to mummble and talk, Gracie likes the sound effects. Her favorite is the ear-piercing beep of a fire alarm. I'm trying to teach her the adams family whistle

My vet told me something interesting on Friday that I did not know, and I bet others here don't know either. During the breeding season (which is now for Greys, at least in the wild), birds weigh more because their reproductive organs get much larger. I had talked to her about Merlin going from 450 a couple weeks before she came here to 470 and now to 480 in just a few weeks. I also found her weight records from her previous owners going back to 93 and she has weighed anywhere from 448 to 498. So I wanted to know why so much fluctuation? And she explained that to me. I had also commented that Merlin's former roommate, a male amazon showed that as well. Both males and females apparently have big changes in the sizes of their reproductive organs during breeding times. It's something to keep in mind as you weigh your birds. My conure, being so much smaller doesn't have such big fluctuations.

I have the ear piercing fire alarm, too. And Merlin was here about 10 whole minutes when I thought it was the real one and that the house was on fire:)

Gracie weighed 500 gms. when she was taken for her first vet visit by the forer owner which may have been 1.5 to 2 years ago. Rox you are correct in that female birds gain wt. in breeding season. Glad I am not a bird!!

LoL I remember your post about that. She loves to do it when she's getting ready for bed I'm trying to change it to one of her other whistles. I'll have to keep an eye on Gracie's weight. I'd love to see some more grams on her, we'll see what the vet says about it.

Me too! Can you imagine going through that every month:D

I wonder how much the lack of feathers affects Gracie's weight. I know feathers seem like they don't weigh anything, but grams are so very small.

Lucy's really been talking a lot over the weekend. She says
"Um.. She's in your room."

"142... 67.. um..142.." I don't know if she's trying to recall a phone number, or got it from watching sports, because she starts mummbling things like 'touch down.'

She also swears, which is probably not suppose to be funny but I have a bad sense of humor. She laughs as well, and says alot of words in a deep voice that I can't quite catch.

Gracie whistles the andy griffon theme song. I'm teaching her the adams family one, she's got the first few notes down that we whistle back and forth. I was on Skype with my mom last night and she decided to show off all the various noises she knows.

Lol, maybe she should play for the Browns next season. They need some help! Pete watches football and when a TD is scored he yells, "Whoo!" He roots for all the teams though. So if you are a Browns fan, it is usually the other team scoring the majority of the TDs.

Oh no Rox Lucy is from Md. so it would e the Ravens!!

I realized that. Of course, that is my former team and those of us from Cleveland are still upset about that whole thing. Despite that, I will grant you that the Ravens are a very good team. But, the Browns might actually benefit from a Grey at QB, lol!
