Hahn's Macaw 'Minty' (Mentita) - doh 08/05/11 aka Mentita; Peachface Lovebird 'Pichito' doh 10/05/10; baby CAG "Coco" doh 01/25/12; Sun Conure 'Conito' doh 04/13/11 RIP 11/14/11.
Hi everyone, i just got a new baby CAG! (hatched 01/25/12). I went to BirdJungle (Scarsdale, NY) to buy bags of Harrison's HP to my Hanh's Macaw and i fell in love with a 10 weeks old baby grey, i just couldnt resist; i got out from there with the baby, toys and a Kings Cage (Elt4-2620) lol. He/she is still to be named, in the meantime i call him/her "baby graphite" lol. He is getting used to his new cage and toys and is taking the formula like a champ (me and my girlfriend have experience doing this, i insisted to give me the baby unweaned and they have know me for years). I have a question, i do have a wonderful Hahn's Macaw (Minty), the CAG got home on Friday but i havent introduce to each other yet, i wanted the CAG to settle down during the first week but i am not sure how to do it and if it's going to be a good idea. I would love them to get along. Minty already saw the baby CAG and seems to be happy/curious about him. Any advice/ideas? I will post pictures of the baby CAG during the day. Thanks a lot!

CAG feather dust can cause pulmonary hypersensitivity in macaws. This is a rare condition, but EXTREMELY debilitating for your macaw, if it gets this. Try to prevent it ever happening by keeping the two birds in separate ends of the house, ensuring good ventilation, using HEPA air filters (avoiding the ionizing option) and living in a warm and humid climate, if possible.

You'll also want to quarantine the new bird, being very careful to wash up between handling your new grey and your hahns, until you've had the new baby vet checked and can be sure he/she is healthy. And as Enjru said, you'll still want them in separate rooms even after the grey is quarantined.

Also, just curious, does the 2620 in the cage's name refer to the width and depth?

This is very important advice!

Always handle the newest bird last!

But it sounds like quarantine procedures were not observed from the start. This means all 3 birds will now need avian vet visits to screen for infectious diseases.

Well, you probably don't have to cart them all in unless one becomes ill. If one does, they might all get sick.

And when I was stupid enough to let this happen, only the bird next to the sick bird got sick also. The other bird, who was across the room from them did not. So it may not be too late to quarantine.

Thanks for your valuable advises. All my birds are up to date with vet checks, they even have health insurance :). The baby CAG is in a separate room and the spaces are very well ventilated. I will keep the baby CAG "quarantined" for about two weeks which is when i plan to take him to the vet for his first welness check-up. They are not together in the same room. The Hahns took a quick look from his cage at the baby CAG when i brought it home but they havent had any type of contact. I really appreciate your advises, i will order a HEPA air filter today like Enjru suggested.

That's really small for a CAG

I will have to double check the model/serial number, i know for sure it's a Kings ELT, perhaps I wrote the last 4 digits wrong in my original post. The measurements above posted were copied from the king's cage website assuming it was the correct number. They all look alike despite the size (generic photo). I must have put the wrong serial then. I can assure you that the cage is not small because it didn't even fit in my car (disassembled) and it's actually very big with a nice playtop. I will post pictures of it and the baby when i get home later.

Here are two pictures of baby Graphite that I took this morning after feeding him, sorry for the pix quality (ipad2 camera is terrible!). I will upload nice and funny pics of the baby during the weekend. Enjoy your day!

It's been a while since the original post so I wanted to share a little update. Coco (the baby CAG) and Mentita (the Hahn's) ended up getting along very well. They do not interact too much but when they do, they get along fine. I have installed two air purifiers (Holmes, no iononizer). They love to scream to each other from their cages lol. Coco is super sweet and very social. Here 's a picture of both of them.

They're adorable with their little peanuts! Are they completely tamed?

put the cages side by side but not to close where they can reach each other. for a few days or weeks. then have one on each arm get them kinds close and see how they do. then go from there. then you can then hopfully put them on the same perch together

Are they both well clipped?
A wind comes up and they could be gone.
Has the CAG fledged yet? I understand it adds a lot to their confidence if you let them fly. Our Mj (CAG ) has a baby clip so she can fly some but I would never take her outside without a more aggressive clip or a harness. She is 4 months old now.

Not a good idea to feed peanuts because of the high potential for a fungal infection being transferred to your birds, most especially in shells.

They are given only as a very rare treat and are "human grade".
