Maui - Male CAG (my baby) (Mom's babies) KiKi - Sun Conure, Fred & Wilma - Fisher Lovebirds, Gully,Sweetie,Baby - Cockatiels, Mork & Mindy - Zebra Finches Luna,Sky,Jilly - Budgies 16 Gouldian Finches
Tonight at approximately 7PM, I was standing in the doorway of my front door and Maui was perched up on my shoulder, unfortunately, Maui was spooked and took flight. His spook turned into fear when he didn't know which way to go, where to land or how to get back to Mommy. Maui flew and flew and flew until he reached the top of the highest tree in my neighborhood. I could see him and he could see us but he was so confused  by the branches and limbs and leaves and all of the things that he knew would obstruct his flight, he didn't know how to get down to me. So, my daughter grabbed the extension ladder with my husband, we threw it over a couple of fences belonging to next door neighbors, and she proceeded to climb that VERY high tree, all the while talking to Maui. Sadly, it appeared that Maui may have "climbed" down toward her, but, another bird attacked him, :( so he took flight AGAIN! Only THIS time, we didn't see exactly where he'd landed, we only could see the general vicinity in which he stopped flying a couple roads away from home. My family and neighbors all walked around clicking, whistling, talking and I, well, I was absolutely broken and desperately trying to call my baby, but, couldn't stop crying. It's dark now, we couldn't see Maui even if we KNEW right where he is, but, I'm hopeful, very hopeful that Maui will sit tight, be still just for the night. I have his cage sitting right out in the middle of my front yard with the door open, loaded with ALL his favorite foods and snackies.... The next door neighbor agreed to put his "puppies" in the house for the evening, I brought my cat's into my bedroom for the evening and other neighbors all have their pets contained for the night as well, as not to scare Maui from coming down to his cage when daylight breaks, if Maui can see his cage. At 6AM in the morning, I'll be bringing Oakley (Hubby's Sun Conure, Maui's Best Friend) and her cage outside in the front yard right next to Maui's cage. We're hoping that Oakley will miss her buddy and will help us call for him because, that is exactly what will be happening at my house just as SOON as the sun begins to rise.

I'm devastated beyond belief, sick to my stomach,:( wished I could turn back the hands of time, blame myself completely, I knew better than to trust that he would "never fly away from his Mommy", I just want my sweet, precious and amazing feathered friend back, Maui completes me in ways that I NEVER thought ANY pet could do, let alone a bird pet. :07::07:

May I ask ALL of you wonderful bird lovers to please say a prayer for Maui's safe return? Could you guys all pray that Maui stays safe tonight, that any predators in the area will stay far way from my sweet bird? That Maui sits tight for the night and hears our callings in the morning? That he'll hear us and Oakley calling out to him, that it will lead him to us and his cage? I BELIEVE in the power of prayer and I also BELIEVE that if we put out ALL POSITIVE thoughts into the Universe, that the Universe will respond in a POSITIVE way.

Lisa I am so sorry! your story has me in tears! I think it is a great idea to take Oakley outside, hopefully Maui will here his calls and find his way back to you. I can only imagine how you feel right now but try not to blame yourself, I'm sure he will find his way back home, I can't imagine he will travel much farther during the night, most birds are pretty apprehensive about flying into the darkness. Please, please keep us posted, until then, wishing you all the best of luck.

IcyWolf!!! OMGSH, I completely believe you when you say my Maui's taking off brought you to tears, because, I can remember a few times hearing of similar stories and just the mere thought of it happening to me, also brought me to tears. I do blame myself, I shouldn't have stood in that doorway with him, I should have had him clipped WEEKS ago, but, just hadn't gotten around to taking him in yet. Thank you so much for your words of encouragement too, all of your replies are giving me more hope to cling onto. I certainly will keep everyone posted, for sure!

wolf0994, Thank you SO MUCH for your compassion AND for the prayer! I can use all of those I can get right now, that's for sure. I surely am hoping and praying for the best of outcomes and that he'll make it back home safely! Nonetheless, I'll be sure to let everyone know how this all turns out, no matter what.

To all of you awesome feather loving friends!!!!!

As I started this thread, it was difficult to do through all the tears, however, your responses, votes of confidence, prayers and compassion for my sweet Maui has truly lifted my spirits and has restored some hope into my heart, so, to all of you, THANK YOU!! I'm NOT going to give up on finding my baby!!! Did you know that parrots are actually somewhat telepathic? Did you know that they can tell how you're feeling and thinking just by picking up on your thought waves and patterns? CAG's and TAG's are ESPECIALLY emotional parrots, they're very intuitive creatures and KNOW just how their Mommy & Daddy humans are feeling and are rather responsive in very compassionate ways as well...... Because I know this, I've also been talking to my Maui all evening in my heart, telling him that he'll be ok, that he should stay where he is until morning and that Mommy WILL find him and bring him home, and that he should be listening very hard for Mommy and Daddy's voice and for Oakley's call too. Crazy?? Maybe, but at this point, I'll stand on my head and whistle dixie while clinching my buttox to the beat, if it would bring my baby home!!!!!!!

The first time that my bird took off, unexpectedly at evening time, he perched. Once they decide that it's bedtime, he will not move till morning. I wish you the best of luck getting your baby back home safely. Be out there looking for him just before the sun comes up.

When this happened with Amigo, my husband and I never slept that night and got up while it was still not quite light. He was sooo happy to see us, he was perched in a very tall pine close to home. He didn't quite know how to fly down but knew who we were and climbed down. It took him about 20mins. but couldn't wait to get back to us.

Oh WOW, Mare!!!! I think that's an awesome awesome recovery story. I sure hope mine will be similar! I know what you mean about not sleeping, Ironically, I didn't sleep well last night AT ALL, for whatever reason, SO, I'm so completely exhausted, but, couldn't sleep if I tried, I'm just so very worried about him. I will be outside off and on all night, making whistling noises, calling out to him to tell him "It's Ok, Maui, Mommy will get you in the morning, just stay where you are till it's light outside and you'll be ok, I promise" I'm sure my neighbors all think I've TOTALLY lost my marbles, but I really could care-less. I just hope I'm not keeping any of them up.

I am so so sorry to read about this awful event. I have a friend in Bradenton (who happens to be a bird person) who I will tell to be on the look out. I will also tell the staff at Sarasota Jungle Gardens to be aware of the situation and notify me of any sightings. Hoping for Maui's safe return...

Oh So Awesome gig!!!! Thank you kindly for helping me to look out for my sweet Maui! He's such an amazing and sweet little guy, I will just be so lost without him. He's my very best friend, he can make me smile through some of the hardest, most emotional times in my life. That bird can sometimes have a greater affect on my attitude and/or my happiness than most any human being. It's crazy, I'm CRAZY, I guess, LOL.. but, I just love him to pieces, he's just a baby still, he's not even quite 2 years old yet!:(:(:(:(:(:(

When this happened with Amigo, we were out there with flash lights, calling and calling. Don't be to aggressive with your search at night. We startled some ravens and that wasn't good for them, they aren't meant to fly at night. If you call to him do it calmly and quietly, just so he knows which direction you are in, not that he will come, just so he knows.

Get some sleep, your baby will be waiting for you in the morning. Prayers and energy, coming your way.

I lost Cory, my short billed corella like this... The wind took him... I contacted all vets, the RSPCA and sent around flyers... The RSPCA were the one people called, when they saw or found a bird that could have had a home (like a tame one)

One week later I got a call from the RSPCA, and they gave me the number of the person, who might had seen him.... I drove straight up there after talking to the man, and that was my Cory... He was sooooo thin, but he was alive.. He slept on my pillow that night... I just couldn't bear not to be close to him...

I will pray for your little guy as I prayed for my Cory...

A few years ago, Coriander went missing for 4 days. I walked around the neighbourhood, day after day, every couple of hours (carrying a lightweight plastic travel crate, a long perch and some sunflower seeds), calling out for him, talking to every pedestrian I saw, door-knocking on every single residence, going into every single shop, rang all the vets and pet shops in the neighbourhood and printed hundreds of flyers that I stuck all over the bus stops, streetlight posts, shop windows (after asking for permission), and outside the garage door and front gate to my own house (this last point is VERY IMPORTANT so people know where to find you). Friends with kids got their schools to announce at school assembly time if everyone can keep an eye out for Coriander. Lots of neighbours were extremely helpful. In particular, there were half a dozen neighbours who took on the task of looking out for Coriander using binoculars, and I would get regular updates from them on my phone about where Coriander is and what he is up to. For the first 3 days, he stayed within the one block around my house. However, he was usually very high up on the tallest trees, and didn't know how to get back down. One time, he was on a low street tree just diagonally across the street from where my house is, and began talking to a neighbour who was walking home after work. The neighbour quickly called out to me over my fence to tell me that he had found Coriander (this neighbour later told me he only knew to find me at my house because we had stuck flyers on our garage door and on our front gate). However, when I got there, a crowd had gathered around and Coriander put one foot onto a broomstick handle but was too nervous, with so many people around, to put both his feet on, and he eventually flew up into a high tree in my neighbour's garden. We called the fire rescue, but there was nothing they could do, because the tree was too high and it was getting dark. We could see him walking around a couple of branches and we kept calling out to him, and he responded, congratulating himself for being "so smart!!" a few times, until he eventually stayed still and stayed quiet after it got dark. The neighbour had a cat which she promised to keep inside the house that night.

On the fourth day, a couple of people rang me to tell me they saw him flying off towards the next suburb which is a clifftop suburb next to the Pacific Ocean. He chose to land on a brand new residence which had one bushy plant on the whole property, next to the swimming pool which overlooked the cliff and the waves. The dad was having a swim and Coriander said, "Hello!" to him, scaring the wits out of him, making him think there was a sociable intruder (SCARY!) on his property who was spying on him while he was swimming! The daughter rang the Wildlife Rescue and the person she spoke to just happened to be a bird trainer, who advised her to place some apple on the poolside table and see if Coriander will eat it, and then to cover him with a laundry basket, if he went to eat the apple. The daughter managed to do all this, and she then gave a description of Coriander to the bird trainer/wildlife rescue worker who immediately realized that Coriander is an Amazon (not too common in Australia) and she drove about 1.5 hours to this girl's home and took Coriander to the vet, realizing that an Amazon, being not common in Australia, might be microchipped. Coriander was scanned at the vet and my details came up (only because I had registered my details the day before), and the bird trainder/wildlife rescue worker brought Coriander home to me. Coriander said a loud "HELLO! GOOD BIRD!" as soon as he saw us. As soon as Coriander came into our garage, lightning flashed and thunder crashed, and heavy rains came pouring down onto the city for the next few days.

I write this very long post for you to give you hope that Maui CAN be found, and I will pray for you and Maui, like I prayed for Coriander, all those years ago.
