Yesterday we went to Todd Marcus and fell in love with a male Timneth. They also had a female, but it kept growling at us. LOL

He hatched 4/13/12 so he's 52 days old or 7 weeks.

We're going to finish off the hand feeding. Still deciding upon a name so far we've come up with Max & Simon. My son just suggested Ducky, he says he sounds like a duck.

Is there any words of advise you can give us about how to proceed to make sure he bonds well. I was told not to handle him to much because you want to build independence and confidence in him. Try to limit handling to about 1 hour per day. True?

Here is a picture of him.

He is adorable!! From someone who bred birds for over 15 yrs, my advice is to let Todd finish the weaning with baby. To much can go wrong and you will not be covered if it is your fault. JMHO. :)

Congratulations on your new baby Grey!

So when you say "We're going to finish off the hand feeding" are you saying that you brought him home to complete the weening or are you going to visit him daily to feed under supervision? Just curious.

I feel confident to be able to do the hand feeding.
My concern has to do with bonding. Will he have a parent bond with me and will he refuse to mate bond with me or my wife as he may view us as parents?

Grey cloud,
What do you think could do wrong?

Thanks

BTW, I checked and California is the only state that has banned selling unweaned babies. :(

Yes CA seems to pass good laws first. Now they are working on a law that makes it mandatory to restrain a pet that is riding in your automobile so be ready for this one.

I have a female Timneh since she was 13 weeks old. At that time she was fully weaned and fledged. I would never take a baby that had to be fed. Much too risky. Bonding will come naturally if you do not frighten the bird and go slowly Sing, dance and read to her. Eat you meals with her. Things like that.

Congrats, but you really need to let them finish the handfeeding. You could asperate the chick, not keep him warm enough, you could keep him too hot, the formula could be too cold and give him sour crop, you could feed it too hot and burn a hole in his crop and kill him. Not only is handfeeding risky but weaning is the hard part, the baby stops eating almost completley and you just have to sit and watch. You cant push the food into him because then you will asperate him because he doesnt want the food, and he wont lose weight so he wont be able to fly. Can you handle all this? Plus whoever said handfeeding your own baby makes a stronger bond is full of it, babies bond to you better when you are feeding them but once they are weaned they start looking for their mate which wont be you because they see you as their parent.
Trust me, it is worth the wait to have them finish the feeding/weaning and then you can actually be seen as his mate instead of parent.

I decided to exchange the TAG for a female CAG that was hatched 2/18/12, she was previously on hold for someone and they cancelled the night before. I thought it was best for the TAG and our situation here at home.

I spent almost 3 hours with her at the store before deciding. I was working on step ups with her and she picked up really quick. Prior to me doing this she would step up by pushing your finger against her belly. After a while she would start to raise her leg when I said step up to her. So I was doing latter’s with her. She seems to enjoy it. She started to get tired and was yawning and closing her eyes while I was holding her.

While driving home she was upset about being in a box. Actually upset is an understatement; she was pissed! When I got her home I opened the box on the floor for her to walk out. She was so pissed at me. In retrospect I should not have been the one to put her in the box, but I was.

She was growling at me and wanted nothing to do with me, if I approached her she looked like JAWS with her open beak. I got some pellets and offered them to her. At first she did not want anything to do with them. So I put them to my mouth then offered them to her. I allowed her to bite them in my hand instead of my hand. She as so upset about the ride it made her more tired, so she was starting to yawn and close her eyes, but every few seconds she would open her eyes and look at me. After about a half an hour with my lying on the floor talking to her. I was able to get her to step up to me and I put her in her new cage. Later I was able to take her out. She left my wife touch her with a little reservation. I mixed up a little formula as a treat and I gave her some and so did my wife and she seem much better with both of us.

Today she is exploring her cage and seems to enjoy it. I had her out 3 times today for just a few minutes each time. I want to let her get adjusted but also know that I’m here for her.

Working on a name, MJ is under consideration.
Here is a picture of our little girl.

Mj is settling in very well. She is no longer nippy, every evening she likes to snuggle with me on my chest and fall asleep. Last night she crawled up under my chin and went to sleep. She is so cute and sweet.

Had one little problem so far which seems to becoming under control. She would try to crawl up me and grab my necklace. I started putting a towel on my chest and when she would work her way up to get it or my shoulder, I would tell her no. If she kept going I would fold the towel over her and more her back down. After a few times of this she got the idea.
