I called and spoke to an Avian vet yesterday to get information about the first visit. The vet said he would go over everything at the initial visit.

On the phone he told me that he would explain in detail of each of the following checks:
Gram Stain
Blood Profile
Polyonoma (virus check)
PBFD (virus check)
Clamedia
DNA sex

He recommenced as a minimum to have:
Gram Stain
Blood Profile

Now my question...
What are the tests and why?
What is recommended?

Thanks,

unfortunately i cant answer your question :(
i would also like to know. i only have 3 vets to chose from in my state and so far they have been useless. i feel like i have to ask for everything specifically, and go and re-check everything they said on the internet afterward anyway.

Blood profile checks organ function, White blood cell count to test for infections, kidney, liver function. Gram stains of feces shows infection, bacteria, parasite. Crop gram stain shows yeast and bacteria.
Polyoma is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that can be passed down from parents, Chlymedia is pssitacosis which is contagious, PBFD is beak and feather which is terminial.

some vets will let you set up a payment plan, so ask it never hurts and the biggest reason for all those test now is most vets only see animals when they are sick or even near death and have nothing on the bird and how it is normally. Is your bird lisless or just the most laid back conure ever? Birds temps are very high but what is normal for your bird? Most importantly you want your bird to feel comfortable with this person who is poking and prodding him/her to know that all this fuss and blood drawing isn't some kind of punishment but to make them feel better and all that can't be done in just one visit but that one visit when you bird is well and healthy can give your vet some place to start. Thank you Dr. Rhyne you saved my bogart when I was ready to have hm put down, and I know he thanks you too.

Honestly John, I would get them all. These are the tests that will show if there is any diseases or illnesses. Getting them done protects your guarantee with the seller.
